For several years now, Ryan Lucker and Oscar Fuentes do the mid July double and do it well. They travel to the Rock the Pier and get their top ten finish in the six mile beach run and then head back to town for a quick 5k at the Howlin' at the Moon race.
This year Ryan (Stockdale/CSUB) came in 4th overall in a time of 32:43. He might of won the race if the three amigos two minutes ahead of him had not made a surprise appearance at the race.
Tough to win a race when an Olympian and his buddies show up for a local race. Billy Nelson won but only 8 seconds, behind him was Brian Medigovich. Who runs for Adams state and lead his high school to a state cross country title in his junior year. In third was Jameson Mora who ran 30:48 and use to run for Cal Poly SLO.
So getting fourth behind these athletes is pretty good. In 7th overall, Oscar Fuentes (East/Cal Poly SLO) ran 33:53. Both Oscar and Lucker ran well at the Howlin' 5k. Ryan won (see photo) and Oscar came in second.
Ryan told me an amusing ancedote at the Rock to Pier. before the race he did the time honored tradition of waitng in line for the pre-race bathroom pitstop. In front of him was a very fit runner in some Nike gear. Ryan made small talk and asked where the runner went to college. The athlete said "Colorado" and then Lucker noticed the Olympic rings tattoo and realized who he was talking to.
