This information came from Bakersfield, Stockdale and Centennial. According to them this decision was recently made by the ADs and the meets will be hosted by Bakersfield, Independence and Stockdale.
The status of SYL and SEYL dual meets is unchanged as of 08.16.10. The reason I am reporting this information is one it is news and two if you like or do not like the changes, now is the time to make you voice heard.
This year is the first year that we will have three leagues here in Bakersfield. Long ago we had just the SYL, then it split into the SEYL and the SWYL and now we will have the SYL, SEYL and the SWYL. Besides the league changes, there were some division changes as well. Sadly our section does not do it by population only. For some reason they decided to take in past performance in determining a school's placement.
In 2007, Centennial won the boys and girls Valley D-2 titles and was rewarded with a move to D-1. This year nine time D-4 state champ McFarland boys have been moved to D-3.
Below, I have listed each division with the local schools and what league they are now in. The results shown were last year's valley results.

Boys D-1:
BAKERSFIELD (SWYL) - In June of 2009, the entire varsity squad graduated and the Drillers were back to where they were in 2006 for the most part. With no veterans returning, the Drillers went from 5 - 1 in the SEYL to 1 - 5 and took its lumps in the valley meet.
Like 2006, they had a young squad who improved through the season and are back this year. Kevin Scrivano and Evan Bowman are their top returners and have been doing well in local races this summer and placed well in a 5k in San Francico.

CENTENNIAL (SWYL) - As mentioned before, the Golden Hawks won Valley titles in 2007 and it was great retirement present for Coach Randy Jones. In 2008, they were moved to D-1 and had a new coach and then in 2009 they got another. Coach Vondre Armour is now coaching his second season and reports that he has a large team that has been training well this summer.
Vondre of course is a former Driller who won a state 800 title back in the day and hopes to bring back the days of Coach Jones this season. In 2009, he too had a young squad and they are all returning for the most part. His top two runners are Eric Millan and Craig Varner who look to improve on their 9th out of 10 finish as a team at valley this year.

STOCKDALE (SWYL) - In the SWYL this year youth is the word and the Mustangs have it in droves every year. Plus these youngsters are fast too. Last year Stockdale just missed making it to the state meet as a team. They came in 4th and were 18 points behind Clovis West. They laost to Ridgeview in league action but it was a very close race.
In 2009, they and Ridgeview were the first Bakersfield squads to break 85 minutes on the Woodward course in decades. This year they maybe the first Bakersfield D-1 squad to make it to state as a team. They only lose Blair Slaton and will be lead juniors Cameron Miller and Curtis Kelly. Miller qualified for state as an individual athlete and Kelly has been a top ranked age group runner for years.
Both have been training hard this summer and will be surrounded by a well balanced squad of returners plus they always seemed to get a freshman or two every year.

EAST (SEYL) - The Blades have had some good teams over the past couple seasons and always peak for the championship season. They often disappear during the regular season to focus on training which maybe a good thing since many local teams seem to be burned out by Novemeber. They are losing a couple runners but seem to find new ones every year. Their top runner, Moses will be a junior this year and he qualified for state last year.

FRONTIER (SWYL) - Looks like they will be returning their entire valley squad from last year and every year the Titans have a large number of athletes on their rooster. If their top 5 couple improve by a minute or so they would have a very good senior year.

GARCES (SEYL) - With the graduation of multiple year state qualifier O'Malley, the Rams do not have a clear cut leader. Plus much of their valley squad has graduated so there will be a new group running this year. I do know that they have been training lately and have a large turnout.

HIGHLAND (SEYL) - The power trio of Van Zandt, Lewis and Turner have lead the Scots to SEYL titles and a number of bridesmaid finishes at the valley meet as well. They have now graduated but coach Mayberry always has a large turnout every year and knows how to get his runners ready for the championship season.
In 2010, they should be lead by Ivan Esquivias who has been an outstanding 4 or 5th man over the past two seasons. Their main SEYL competition should come from East this year.

LIBERTY (SWYL) - From what I can find the patriots did not field a team at the valley meet. They did come in 4th in the SEYL league meet last year and have a number of returning athletes.
NORTH (SEYL) - Coach Brian Huens had a large young squad last year and will have 6 of his 7 valley squad back. They will be lead by senior Tobias Lopez lat year they were 8th at valley and third at the SWYL league meet. This year they will be in the SEYL and will be up against some traditionally good squads like Highland, East and Foothill.

GOLDEN VALLEY (SYL) - From what I can tell the Bulldogs did not field a scoring team at valley last year but senior to be Daymon Sandles did qualify fo the state meet.
INDEPENDENCE (SWYL) - I believe this is the first year that Independence will have seniors. They will be lead by senior Dwayne Falco as they join Yosemite league action.

Mc FARLAND (ESL) - They have racked up 9 state titles and too many valley titles to count. In the past five years they have placed no worst then 5th at the state meet in pursuit of their tenth title. For all of these great achievements, they are being rewarded by being moved up to D-3.
Their population is way below the 1250 limit of D-4 but that does not seem to matter to the powers that be in the Central Section. All I know is the rest of the D-4 schools in the state should send the Central Section Czar a nice Christmas present for moving McFarland out of D-4.
The good thing is 5 of their top 7 are returning from their second place state team. they are lead by sophomore Erik Garcia who won the D-4 title last year. Until last year, no other Kern County had broken 85 minutes besides Mcfarland at Woodward Park. Of course McFarland does this all the time with times under 83 minutes.

For D2 boys he has Highland 3rd, North 4th, East 5th and Frontier 10th. The top three local schools are now in the new SEYL. Highland has lost their power trio to graduation and will need to reload. The Scotsmen usually have large squads wh...ich makes reloading easier.
ReplyDeleteEast has been Highland's closest competition in the old SEYL recently and will be looking for a title this year. Often East is off the grid till the championship season and then they come on strong.
This is North's first year in a league with the old SEYLers and they are reported to have a good summer and a good turn out for this season.
For D1 boys he has Stockdale in 3rd, Centennial 7th and Bakersfield 8th. All 3 of these schools are in the new SWYL and the Mustangs return 6 of their top 7 from last year. This is Centennial's second year under Coach Armour and he reports... that he has a large turn out this year and is looking to be competitive this year. The Drillers had a young squad last year and will looking for more new runners this year as well.

For the D3 boys Larry has McFarland ranked number 2 behind Madera South. This is the first year for McFarland in D3. The enrollment cap for D4 is 1250 (I believe) but because they have been so successful, they have moved to D3. 5 of their top 7 are returning this year and they are lead by sophomore Erik Garcia who lead the Cougars to a D4 valley championship with his own individual valley title. They came in 2nd at the state meet (they have 9 state titles overall).
Ranked 4th is Shafter who return 4 of their top 5 and are lead by senior Jesus Villalpando. The Generals usually have a large turnout and a good summer training program so look for them to move up in this tough division.
Wasco is ranked 5th, Indepenence 7th, Foothill 9th and Golden Valley 10th. Next Friday Wasco is hosting the 3rd Annual Wasco Cross Country Invitational and many of these teams will be there.
