Almost a Sweep of the Field

A male Bakersfield athlete won every field event except for the pole vault at valley this year. Marty and Johnny handled the horizontal jumps, George took the vertical and Matt dominated the throws.

The valley record in the high jump is: 7'2.25 jason howard,rv-bkd '97 and the meet record is: 7'00 eric nyberg,mt whithey-vis '94 gabriel zarete, selma '97 cole herron, sanger '02

This year's winner George Robbins (West) cleared 6'8 and is tied with Garce's McCullom for the best in the valley. Robbins went to state last year with Bakersfield's Isiah Griggs, who did not compete this year.

The valley record in the long jump is: 26'4.75 James Stallworth, tulare u '89. The valley meet record is: 25'9.5 gerald hardeman,edison-fre '72.

Affentranger was mainly known as a long sprinter (has run at stae in the 1600 relay the past two years) but this year he took up the event and was the best in the valley all season long. He plans on attending Cal Poly Slo in the fall and compete there as well.

The valley record in the triple jump is: 52'6.5 David Tucker, sjm-fre '70. The valley meet record is: 51'2.5 david tucker,memorial-fre '71.

As a freshman, Carter (Ridgeview) came on strong at the end of the season and won both the valley and state titles. This year he has been injured but still won the valley crown. With two weeks before state, hopefully he can be ready for state injury free and ready to defend his title.

The valley record in the shot put is: 69'3.5 van mounts, bksfd '98. The valley meet record is: 67'0.75 van mounts bksfd '97 '

As a sophomore, Matt Darr (Frontier) racked up a lot of seconds locally behind state champ Dashan Ragans of Foothill. This year Matt has been the man to beat. At state last year he came in 16th in the shot.

The valley record in the discus is: 210'0 jeff buckey, bksfd '91 and the valley meet record is: 202'1 rob powell, redwood-vis '90

Matt just missed making state in the discus in 2008. This year, he has been picked by some to possibly win both throws like Ragan did in 2008.

Three Then Two

What should have been a great Bakersfield end to the valley meet has ended up being marred in controversy and conspiracy theories. Instead of marveling at Centennial's amazing race and the spectacular finish, many are dwelling on the negative.

From what I have pieced together, it all came down to a baton being thrown for some unknown reason and not ready for prime time results being flashed on the big board to soon.

All I want to say is "What a Brilliant Race!" and congratulations Myren, Jim, Matt and Thomas!

For the first time in awhile, Edison and Bakersfield High were nowhere near the top of the valley rankings. With Purvis transferring to Ridgeview, it made them an immediate player in the 1600 relay and Liberty reloaded and was looking for a return trip to state. Last year Liberty came in 13th and Bakersfield came in 17th in the state prelims.

This year, Centennial joined the ranks of state bound 4 x 400 squads.

Homefield Advantage

Watching is harder then doing? In the hurdles that seems to be the case. Coaches and parents are in agony watching their athletes in these events. One slight misstep and the hurdles come crashing down almost as hard as the parents dreams.

In the 300 hurdles, I was standing next to Johnson's dad and when there was a false start he was beside himself with apprehension that the race was over before it started. Then when the athletes came running by us at the top of the homestretch, he was willing Sean over every hurdle and di not take a breathe till he crossed the line.

Sadly freshman King of Centennial came in the dreaded fourth place and won't be moving on to state.

Another Three in the Top Five

The valley record for the 3200 meter run is: 8:49.4 peter romero, reedley '67 and the valley meet record is: 9:02.71a kyle alcorn,buchanan-clo '02

Going into the meet, everyone was expecting big things from Vilhauer especially since he threw down 9:02 at Arcadia and was skipping the 1600 to focus on the 3200. Some were even predicting a sub nine performance. But with the first lap clocking in 69, the hoped for fast race was not in the cards.

By the 800 (2:19), Schwartz had taken a slight lead and Vilhauer moved to counter Schwartz's move. At the 1200 (3:29) the duo had broken away from the chase pack that was paced by the Buchanan athletes. By the 1600, the top four finishers had established their lead over the rest of the field.

As the race progressed, Schwartz maintained his lead but Vilhauer was slowly being reeled in by Sanchez and Reedy. With a lap to go the Bears had caught Justin and were moving fast and ended up putting five seconds on the Redwood sophomore. In the end, Buchanan placed 2nd, 3rd and 5th in the 3200. Super frosh CJ Albertson (Buchanan) ran 9:33 for the Bears and barely beat Robby Baker (Ridgeview Jr.) who PRed in the last race of his season.

At state in 2008, Scwartz came in second in a time of 8:58 and Sanchez came in 9th in a time of 9:10

Sanchez and Schwartz went through the first lap in 62 but the pace slowed and they came through the 800 in around 2:10 with Reedy and Lewis of Highland in tow. By the 1200, Schwartz and Sanchez separated themselves from Lewis.

Down the homestretch, Lewis faded to 7th and it looked like Buchanan would go 2nd, 3rd and 4th but Tesfai managed to out kick both Bears for the final state berth. None of this year's qualifiers ran at state in the 1600 in 2008.

Jerrid can run from the back or from the front and in the end, the results are the same. With sub fifty 400 speed and are very successful cross country season under his belt, it looks as if Jerrid has a very good shot at making Saturday night at state.

The final at valley was a close one with six runners within two seconds of each other. From the start, Jerrid took the lead and never looked back. Down the homestretch everyone was moving fast but no one could catch Lewis. None of this year's qualifiers made state in the 800 in 2008.

Too Big a Bite

Bigelow had to hit the afterburners to win the 400 and it may have taken him out off the running in the 100 and 200. He pulled up in the 100 and scratched the 200 later in the evening. Behind him, Marty and Isiah continued their rivalry. The former Liberty teammates have been trading places recently with Marty winning at the south area meet. At valley, Isiah prevailed.

So Fast

Besides shooting track & field, I also shoot skateboarding. When at a location, I can pick out the good skaters immediately before they even try a trick because they do everything fast and smooth. Jelmini reminds me of the great skaters I have seen. She is so quick and powerful.

Often watching the field events in seems to be a battle between giants who are not to graceful but have the size advantage to heave the implement the farthest. This is not the case with Anna or her teammate Lacie, they are outstanding athletes not just strongwomen.

Then there is Collatz who is truly a gifted athlete who qualified for state in both throws and just missed making state in the triple jump. If she had not recently hurt her ankle she might have made it to state in four events (shot, discus,lj,tj). She also junped 5'2 recently.

Then in fifth in the shot was Bakersfield's Torres who missed almost the entire season due to a soccer related injury. She finally made it out to track in May and won a SEYL title. Speaking of soccer, she was the starting goalie for the Drillers this year as a freshman.

Last year Alexaner (Centennial Sr.) made the state finals in both horizontal jumps but this year, Epps will take her place at state.

Two Weeks To Train

Nice to see Bakersfield take the top two spots in the high jump especislly since state qualifier Isiah Griggs of Bakersfield was M.I.A. this season. Robbins had a season best that ties him with McCullum (Jr.) of Garces.

Like Johnny Carter (Ridgeview So.) in the triple jump, Phillip has been leading the valley most of the season and has also been battling injuries. At valley, Phillip said he was just starting to feel okay and just wanted to make state and he did just that. At last count, there was five seven foot plus jumpers in the state but anything can happen.
