The Girl Crush Chronicles: Ultrarunner Catra Corbett « Fit and Feminist

I first read about Catra in “Born to Run,” where she garnered a couple of sentences as the “kaleidoscopically tattooed” woman who ran the 212-mile John Muir Trail, from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney.  And because that isn’t awesomely bonkers enough, she got to the end of the trail, then turned around and ran back.  As a result, she holds the “yo yo” speed record for women on that trail, completing the whole 424-mile run in 12 days, 4 hours and 57 minutes.

AC TOP CONTENDERS

MEN:

Jorge Pachecho (of course).  Justin Angel has multiple AC finishes in 20 hours.  Raphael Arceo, saw him training near Telegraph Peak awhile back - looked and sounded focused this year.  Word on the street is that Dylan Bowman isn't racing AC after states now, but is going to toe the line with a thickening field of fast cats at Speedgoat in Utah.  Brett Rivers won't make it either.  Bummer.
I hope to be somewhere in the mix, but with my limited experience with this distance, if I were a betting man I’d place my $ on Jorge and Justin.
WOMEN:

This race is going to be much more exciting.  Keira Henninger is my top pick.  She's run the course, she's in great running shape right now and she's uber fierce.  Angela Shartel will definitely be a contender up front as well, as long as she hasn't been disqualified for arguing so much with RD Uncle Hal during the trail work day, we'll see.  Sada Crawford, from the looks of things, has been training like nuts and is super talented.  I don't think she has raced a 100 yet, but has the potential for setting a new CR if a hundo isn't that big of a deal for her.  Paulette Zillmer, yeah, she's really good, won AC last year.  While Wendy Barth isn't thought of as being as speedy as the women mentioned above, she's a smart & steady long distance runner and I see her on the podium because I know she'll finish.

Blake Haney, soph, Stockdale

The nation's top sophomore in the mile (4:09.43) and 3,200 meters (8:54.65) predictably dominated the area distance races, going undefeated locally in the 1,600 and 3,200, winning the latter race at the section meet and then took third in state in the 1,600.

Ivan Gonzalez, jr, Ridgeview

A soccer player who might have found a new sport, Gonzalez out-kicked Buchanan's Cody Brazeal to win the section's 800 crown in 1:54.26. He lowered that PR to 1:53.31 to finish 13th in state.

Cameron Miller, sr, Stockdale

Besides pushing teammate Haney in practice, the Stanford-bound Miller was great in his own right. He qualified for the state meet finals in both distance events after placing third in the 1,600 (4:13.10) and second in the 3,200 (9:12.30) in the section.

Haney only made it look that way. A year after setting a freshman state record in winning the Central Section title in the 1,600 meters, he won a section title in the 3,200 and finished third in the state in the 1,600.
His best times in the mile (4:09.43 at the prestigious adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile), 1,600 (4:09.29) and 3,200 (8:54.65) were the best by a sophomore in the nation.
