Meet Recap:

The top female field performance at the meet was Stockdale's Alex Collatz win in the invitational discus with a throw of 179'6. Also in the throws, Shafter's Lacey Rasley placed 4th in the shot with a throw of 43'6.

On the boy's side, Frontier's Matt Darr came in second in the shot and third in the discus. While Ridgeview's Johnny Carter won the triple jump (49'10 PR) and came in second in the long jump (23'7 PR).

The invitational sections of Arcadia are some of the toughest fields of the year and are often more competitive then the state meet. Kern County usually fairs well in the field events but usually doesn't have many entered in the invitational events on the track.

This year Kern didn't have a girl athlete qualify and only Jerrid Lewis (Ridgeview) ran for the boys on Saturday night. He came in fifth in super competitive 800 race where seven athletes were within 2 seconds of each other. Jerrid got boxed in late in the race but still PRed with a time of 1:53.20. He was the second Californian in the race. Video HERE.

Besides the Invitational events, the seeded events are held on Saturday night as well. These seeded events are more competitive then our valley meet for the most part. The evening started of well in the men's 4 x 100 in that both Bakersfield and Centennial qualified for the final. The Drillers came in 6th (43.11) and Centennial was right behind them in a school record time of 43.14.

The only other Kern athletes to compete in the seeded sections was Ridgeview's 4 x 400 relay squad that included Jerrid Lewis who anchored the squad and took them from 7th to 4th on the final lap. They came in 4th in a time of 3:22.90. Video HERE.

The day before the Saurday night invitational is the Friday Night Relays and many Kern County squads competed well. The Highland boys started off the evening with an 8th place finish in the seeded 4 x 800 out of 26 teams (Video). Then the Drillers won the rated 4 x 200 (Video).

On the girl's side, Centennial came in 6th in the rated 1600 sprint medley (Video) in a time of 4:26.22 and the Drillers came in second in the seeded 1600 sprint medley (Video).

Meet Preview:

Girls Team - The Drillers and Centennial qualified in the Women 1600 Sprint Medley Seeded. This event is all about having a good 800 runner. The race is a 200, 200, 400 and 800. So it is a gauge of a school's overall strength. Many schools have the sprinters but not the 800 girl or they have distance girls but not the sprinters. Bakersfield has Sarah Baker anchoring and Jorey Braughton will be running the 800 for the Golden Hawks. Her teammate Hanna Chudy was the SWYL 400 chanp in 2009.

Independence and Golden Valley qualified for the #102 Women 4x100 Meter Relay Seeded Prelims. Independence's freshman Brena Andrews qualified in the #109 Women 100 Meter Dash Seeded Prelims as well.

Individual Girls - Sophomore Alicia Torres (BHS) qualified in the shot put. This sophomore has been the goalie for the Driller varsity soccer squad since her freshman year. Centennial's Breanna Pendelton and Stockdale's Alex Collatz will be competing in the discus. Lacey Rasley of Shafter will be competing in both of the throwing events.

On the track, Frontier's Taylor Jackson and Kassidy Ellis will be running in the 300 hurdles. Taylor will be in the 100 hurdles too. Jamara Scott of Golden Valley will compete in the long jump. In the triple jump and and high jump, Liberty's Ensley Davis will be competing.

  1. Alyson Delarosa runs a 2:19.80 in the 800, and doesnt get in? Yet girls for other schools in meet get in with a time of 2:21? Sounds like a coach forgot about some of his athletes. Too bad all her hard work got wasted. Well guess high school sports are alive and well in Bakersfield.

  2. Alyson Delarosa runs 2.19.80, girls in meet run 2:21. Sounds like her coach let her down. Kids beware of a Givett run program. Sorry Alyson hard work doesnt matter when you count on adults like that.

  3. From my observations as a long time central section coach,it apears that Alyson posted her top time at the Central Valley Classic on March,27.This is after Arcidia's entry deadline.I also find their track and field program to be of a very high standard, regardless of your petty comments. coach B

  4. get you facts straight henry, as another coach in bakersfield who doesnt know what he's doing! the deadline was march 28, at 3:59 (sunday)! day after she ran her race !!!!!!!
    Her coach screwed up!

  6. All right, my last comment. The update deadline was the 28th. However you must have been entered perivious to that. They would not take entries in the girls 800 that were over 2:23 even into thier database. As far as I can tell her previous best was 2:25.and therfore she could not be entered.
    Look it up!

  7. Two years in a row frontier has let kids down by missing deadlines.is
next year gonna be three? Stop putting all your energy into blogging ,instead
put into into profession you choose. You get paid to coach, so coach and stop making excuses.

  8. Regardless that this is an opportunity for an individual to get noticed, to run a great race against people they'll see in the State. It doesn't mean that they're career is over and that a grudge should be placed on the AD and/or Coach @ Frontier. It was a simple mistake by Coach Gaeta and has no purpose to bring in Gievett. He clearly misread the deadline, and entered an early PR that Alison had set. With that, she now will have the opportunity to run @ West Coast Relays, not Arcadia; and hopefully show what she can do under the spotlight.

  9. Zack Ewing reports:

Last weekend was a big one for track and field types. The Arcadia Invitational is the biggest regular-season meet that most Central Valley athletes travel to and one of the biggest in the nation overall. There were 15 new nation-leading marks set and 35 new California leaders.

Kern County played its part in that impressive display. The headliner probably is Ridgeview junior Johnny Carter (pictured), who threw down a 49-10 in the triple jump, the state's longest mark this year by nearly a foot. Carter, as you probably know, won the state championship in the event as a freshman before finishing second last year. He's been eyeing the 50-foot mark for some time — and he's been there, I'm told, several times in practice and after fouls — so maybe the section meet, May 19 at Clovis-Buchanan, or at state, June 4-5 at Buchanan, will be his stage.

For an encore, Carter hit 23-7 in the long jump to finish second. That mark doesn't count in offical rankings, because it registered a 3.3 wind reading (the legal limit is 2.0), but it shows he's a threat in that event as well. His wind-legal best is 22-6.25, which is still good for 10th in the state.

Elsewhere in the meet, Frontier senior Matt Darr hit 63-2.25 to finish second in the shot put, and that's also the second-best mark in the state this year for the defending champ in both the shot and the discus. Darr was third in the open discus division with a 188-2. He owns the state-leading mark by nearly six feet at 194-11.

    Elsewhere:

    — Ridgeview's Jerrid Lewis ran a 1:53.20 to finish fifth in the 800, and he now owns the state's No. 6 mark this year.

    — Alex Collatz had a heck of a weekend as well. Her path to a state discus championship — she was second to Shafter's Anna Jelmini last year — is clear-cut, and she had a consistent series to prove it. Three throws over 177 feet, the best at 179-6. Collatz's season-high is 180-9, higher than what Jelmini had a junior.

    — Speaking of carrying on for Jelmini, Shafter's Lacie Rasley threw a 43-6 to finish fourth in the shot put. That's well short of her season-best mark of 46-7, one that has her fifth in the state right now.

    — Bakersfield High showed well in a couple of events that aren't included in CIF meets. The boys were ninth in the 800 relay at 1:28.48, and the girls were 10th in the sprint medley relay at 4:16.61.

On another note, I spoke with Rick Jelmini, Anna's dad, the other day, and he told me Anna will be redshirting at Arizona State this year. That's not a knock on Anna's ability or readiness — nay, Jelmini has passed 192 in the discus, which would be in contention for a national championship — but because ASU thinks it will be in the mix for a team title more in the next several years than this year. The Sun Devils don't want to waste Anna's points while they're rebuilding.

Regardless, Jelmini has been sponsored by USA Track & Field to travel to several meets this year as an unattached athlete. The redshirting thing seems like nothing but a positive to me; it's another year for Jelmini to train without having to seek funding or sponsorships as she climbs the list of U.S. throwers before the 2012 London Games (she's No. 7 right now, according to Track and Field News).

I'd say we have ourselves quite a few fantastic track and field athletes here. You?
