Cross Country Division Seedings for 2010

The Central Section CIF Meeting was held Wednesday.

The Board of Managers passed the divisions proposal. Your placement is based on performance, not enrollment.
If you do not know which division your in see the list below for boys and girls (their separate division placements)
If you disagree with the placement of your school, but need to do the following:
A written letter (less than one page) describing why your school should not be placed in the assigned division.
The letter must be submitted to the CIF office by or before February 15th.
The letter must be signed by the Athletic Director or Principal of the school. A letter signed by the coach will not be accepted.

We presented at the first reading two proposals to be voted on in April.
You have until that CIF meeting to let known your opinions on these proposals.
Understand that the Cross Country Committee does not have the final decision, but the Central Sections High School Administrators.
When I attend the meeting in April, most Administrators from the different leagues have already decided which way they will vote. You will need to
make yourself know to your school's administration to set policy.

Proposal #2
Schools whose enrollment are 500 or less shall be placed in Division V

Proposal #3
Schools whose enrollment are 1250 or less shall be placed in Division IV unless the schools qualify for Division V.

Note: Proposal #1 was just a statement read to the Committee.

Meet Preview:

  • This meet is always the kickoff meet to a new track & field season in Bakersfield. Long ago this meet was one of the meets of the year but now it is a shadow of its former self. I ran it back in the early 80s and remember all kinds of relays and medleys that are no longer contested.
  • Back in the day, this was truly a relay meet. In fact, even the field events were a 3 man competition. They averaged the best three marks to determine which school won. But it, the medleys and hurdle relays are no more
  • The distance races (1600 and 3200) were team events too. The 1600 record was a 4:17 average by three athletes from Arroyo Grande in 1994. The 3200 record was a 9:38 average by three athletes from Shafter in 1977.
  • The relays that are contested now are the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800. The individual running events are the 1600, 3200 and the hurdles. All the field events are contested as well. There are three divisions: varsity boys, varsity girls and frosh/soph boys.
  • At this event, there are limited spots available to compete especially in the running events. There is not any 100, 200, 400 or 800. In the past, they have not limited the number of field athletes, so one should consider trying one of the field events if you want to compete at this meet.

DIVISION RESULTS FOR 10K RACE - Because the runners were sent the wrong way, the 10k ended up being a 5.9 mile race (5.9 miles was the average that I got from several runners with GPS watches). To get a 10k time, one needs to multiple the following times by 1.05.

So the winning men's time was 32:20 which would convert to a 34 flat 10k. The winning women's time was 40:20 which would convert to a 10k time of 42:20. These converted times are pretty fast for a very difficult course with lots of turns and terrain changes so they be off.

Torch Tribute and Relief Relay

Sadly, I received the following email this morning:

Facebook HERE.

I am writing in regards to an event that is being organized due to a tragic car accident that occurred in the early morning hours of Nov. 30th. The Bakersfield Californian reported the accident that occurred on Highway 46 on Tuesday December 1st as a single car accident that left the driver, Asencion Mendoza, in critical condition and passenger, Sergio Mendez, dead from injuries suffered in the crash. Here is the link to the article: http://people.bakersfield.com/home/Blog/BreakingNewsTeam/52402

The two men involved were former students at Wasco High School and this crash has left many in the Lost Hills and Wasco communities very upset. Mendoza suffered spinal injuries, and was transported from Kern Medical Center to a special rehabilitation center in Downey, CA has still not regained full movement in his arms and legs. Mendoza was a decorated athlete and two-time All-Area Cross Country nominee. He was a four time South Sequoia League Champion, two-time Central Section Champion, and four-time State Meet Qualifier. He is a big part of our running family here in Wasco.

We have organized an event on Saturday January 23rd in honor of Sergio Mendez and Asencion Mendoza and have named it the “Torch Tribute and Relief Relay”. We are planning on having approximately 50 students and graduates from Wasco High and Lost Hills Elementary participate in a torch relay run between Lost Hills School and Wasco High School . Each runner has pledged to seek sponsorship for their leg of the relay in order to raise money for the families that have been affected by this accident. The route that we will be running is especially meaningful since the crash occurred along the stretch of highway between Lost Hills and Wasco. It is also meaningful because Sergio’s burial plot is located along Highway 46 as well. We hope that this torch relay will create some community interest and we are hoping that you would be willing to help get the word out so that charitable donations may come in. If anyone is willing to make a donation, the payment and mailing information is below. We will also have T-shirts for sale at Lost Hills School and Wasco High School on Saturday, Jan. 23rd. Please let me know if there is the possibility for some exposure. Please feel free to contact me or Lost Hills School principal Veronica Gregory if you have questions.

The event will start at 9:00 on Saturday Jan. 23rd at the Lost Hills School campus. The route will be along HWY 46 between Lost Hills and Wasco. The runners will be escorted by Sheriff and school vans for safety and the torch will stop and light candles in the location of the accident and at Sergio Mendez's gravesite. The entire relay will be about 40 miles long and should take most of the day.

Two Halves Make a Whole
If you complete both half marathons in the same year, you will automatically be counted as having completed the "Two Halves Make a Whole." The only awards here are for overall fastest combined times. Your finisher's medal for each half marathon is actually half of the total finisher's medal. Fit the 2 together for the year to get your complete medal. Finisher's certificates will be sent to those who complete both halves.

The Courses
The February Half (35th annual) is an out and back course running West from Yokut's Park in Bakersfield, CA on the bike path along the Kern River. A fast course with no hills to speak of, you will enjoy running along the Kern River Parkway, which has been landscaped in such a way to preserve a riparian zone that is natural for this area. Click here to view a course map for February's Half Marathon.

The November Half (second annual) also starts from Yokut's park, but this time runners head East on the bike path towards Bakersfield's bluffs before heading back.

5K Courses at each event head in the opposite direction from the half marathon. The 5K is always a competitive event which draws both serious 5K competitors and people who want something to do while waiting to cheer for a friend or family member as they finish their longer race.

Water will be on the course about every 3.5 miles. (at the turn around for the 5K)

Weather. In January (when we have had the event in the past), we have had sunshine, light fog, rain, and once even snow for this event. Expect a chilly start, but come prepared for an event that warms up a bit before you finish. The average Hi/Lo for this day is 58/40 F, the records are 78/25 F

Registration
Besides the registration options at the top of the page, you can also register on the day of the event at Yokut's Park in Bakersfield, CA between 6:30 am and 7:45 am while those who pre-registered quickly pick up their goody bags.

Stuff for You
Awards will go 3 deep in 5 year age groups for both the 5K and half marathon at each event. The half marathon finishers get a finisher's medal that interlocks with the finisher's medal from the other half marathon that year. Quality long sleeve shirt. Finisher's certificates for those who finish both halves. In addition, people who run both halves in a single calendar year will receive a special giveaway (the 2007 special giveaway was a light weight running jacket).

Results
Race results will be posted the same day of the event here on this website. Check out results for some of our past events. If you ran the February, half marathon, and run the half marathon on November of the same calendar year, your two times will be combined for the "2 Halves Make a Whole" marathon.
