Stockdale Boys Ranked the Top Kern County Squad

Sort of odd that Stockdale takes the top spot considering how well McFarland and Ridgeview did at the Clovis Invite. Mcfarland won the small school's race and Ridgeview became the first Bakersfield squad in recent memory to break 84 minutes at Woodward. The great thing is all three will be at the Kern Championship on Halloween.

Fast Times at Golden Valley?

Wednesday night my phone was lighting up with texts about the great times run at Golden Valley. What is known is Daymon Sandles (GV) and Sarah Baker (BHS) easily won their races and ran fast. But the length of the course is a question mark.

I covered the Highland and East meet at Golden Valley but never found any times for that meet. I do know the course is flat and is three loops of unknown length. Each lap did cover almost the entire length of the track and then the course went out and around a large field. But before it came back to the track it did a funky short cul-de-sac like loop before turning back on to the track.

Because of all the sharp turns and grass on the course, I do not think it is that fast of a course. Plus the three loop format is not a favorite of athletes. I also spoke to other coaches whose teams have competed on the course and they think it is short as well.

Having said all that, I would love for the course to be legit. Both Sarah and Daymon are hard working and talented athletes who I know can post the kind of times run today. Daymon ran 15:48 and Sarah ran 17:46 on the Golden Valley course and I know that they can post these kind of times at Hart Park and hope they do so in a few weeks.

In the team competition, the Lady Drillers completed their second season of dual meets undefeated. The Driller boys won the battle to get out of the cellar and are now 1 - 5 while Golden Valley is 0 - 6.

Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational
Celebrating it's 62nd Year, the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational has become our nation's largest cross country invitational. Last year a record 22,000+ participants competed over the famed 3 mile cross country course. The names "Valley Loop", "Switchbacks", "Poop Out Hill" and "Reservoir Hill" have become part of cross country legend and lingo. The course has changed little over the last 61 years, making it one of the few courses where different generations can compare times.

Ridgeview Go Undefeated in SWYL Duels

This meet was the brainchild of a couple former Trojans and the Golden Hawks got to join the fun. Both coaches ran for Foothill and now are head coaches in different leagues but decided to have a duel meet every year.

Centennial is coached by a former Driller and was at this meet because the original meet between them and Ridgeview was canceled due to hot weather.

The outcome was the same as it would of been then with Ridgeview taking its 6th win of the season and completed their back to back undefeated duel meet seasons in the SWYL.

Ridgeview was lead by Baker who recently broke sixteen on the valley/state meet course. Also their 5th runner was only 48 seconds behind Baker which is good for their valley title quest.

Centennial was lead by Millan who almost kept the Gold Hawks from getting 15ed. centennial finished the duel meet season with a 2 - 4 record.

Highland Boys & Liberty Girls Win Season Finales

The Highland trio of Van Zandt, Thomas and Lewis are poised to pick up their third SEYL crown in as many years. This third one has been their easiest too.

In previous years: Bakersfield, East or Foothill have at least challenged them a bit but this year they have beating teams most of the time with a 15. Which means their top five are beating the other school's top runner.

In a few weeks, they should easily take the team title at the SEYL league meet. The drama will be in who wins the individual title and this may well be a race between Lewis and Van Zandt (photo).

Liberty boys finished the season with a 3 - 3 record.

On the girl's side there some unexpected results. First Barton of Liberty lost to Rodriguez of Highland and Liberty won the team race with a close 27 to 29. This gave Liberty a 4 - 2 record which ties them with Foothill for second. Highland ended the season with a 2 - 4 record.

The 343rd Annual Phantom Pie Run

It was cold and dry this year at the Phantom Pie Run. According to John Rous this might have been the largest crowd ever. He said last year was the first time it had rained on the event.

2009 Photos HERE. HERE.
2009 Video HERE.
FaceBook HERE.

I asked John (One of the founders of the Pie Run and the McDonalds/Bagels & Blenders Runs) when all this started and he said in the early 70s. He and some friends started meeting to run at West High and then went to McDonalds on Ming for coffee afterwards. Then they realized that they should just run from McDonalds.

This daily 5am run moved to Bagels & Blenders when Rick Hixson opened his shop on Coffee and Stockdale. Some time in the early 70s, they decided to meet for a run on Thanksgiving day and John's wife baked a pumpkin pie for him and the rest is history.

Run Preview:

Last year it was raining hard as I drove in the dark to this event and was shocked at how many still showed up! So head out early on Thanksgiving day to meet and greet lots of fellow endurance junkies and be prepared for lots of reunions.

Oh and you can run too! So when you come back, you can eat some of the pies! The fun starts around 6am.

Herb Benham's description of the event:

The 343rd annual Pie Run (even John Rous is not that distinguished) is scheduled for Thanksgiving morning at Hart Park. The pie run has been happening for close to 30 years. It’s more love your neighbor, meet-and-greet and welcome the day than it is a race.

Run or walk. Dogs are welcome (leashes are recommended unless you’re Kenny Reed and you have the world’s best-behaved dog).

Meet at Hart Park at first light (around 6 a.m.). Park. Put your pie, cookies, fruit, hot dish on the picnic tables.

Walk or run a mile, six miles, whatever. Return to the park to a real wood fire, coffee, juice and good things to eat.

Bakersfield loves a potluck.

North Finishes SWYL Duel Season 4 - 2

Back on Sept. 30th, most of the duel meets were postponed due to the really hot weather. Today the North vs Frontier at South meet was contested on a Monday afternoon that was ideal cross country weather. North boys and girls beat both schools in this double dual format and now have 4 - 2 records in the SWYL.

Frontier defeated both South squads and both Frontier squads finished the season 3 - 3.

South boys were 1 - 5 and the girls were 0 - 6 this fall.

Fast Times at Roughrider

Robby Baker went sub sixteen and came in 4th overall in the large school division at the Roughrider Invite. His squad came in 4th overall and ran 83:14! Which make his Ridgeview squad the second Bakersfield team in as many weeks to break 85 minutes on the Woodward course.

2009 Photos

Their time is over a minute and a half faster then Stockdale's time of 84:48. Their per man average was 16:39:

4 Robby Baker Ridgeview 15:46
7 Alex Garcia Ridgeview 16:00
10 Brian Solis Ridgeview 16:16
18 Jerrid Lewis Ridgeview 16:46

As was the case last year, the Wolf pack has still not found a fifth man which is crucial if they want to win a valley title and qualify for valley. Their 5 man spread was 2:40 where McFarland's was 37 seconds.

But for now, I must say breaking 84 minutes is great for local distance running because I have only recorded McFarland achieving this milestone in recent memory. At this meet Ridgeview beat McFarland 83:14 to 83:25 but if they ran in the same race, Mcfarland would win with their pack style finish:

2 Erik Garcia McFarland 16:33
6 Marco Perez McFarland 16:42
7 Marco Camargo McFarland 16:47
9 Francisco Nava McFarland 16:58
10 Jose Monrreal McFarland 17:00

BOYS LARGE SCHOOL VARSITY - A friend of Andy Noise won the race in 15:13, Justin Vilhauer came to town last spring to run the Lee Adams Open and has become friends with our local athletes. As a sophomore he ran 9:02 for the 3200 and this year he will be gunning for sub nine.

Behind Ridgeview in the team standings was Highland whose trio of Van Zandt (16:53), Colin Lewis (17:12) and Thomas Turner (17:14) also ran a good team time with their other scoring runners posting:
  • Ivan Esiasquiv Highland 17:30
  • Mike Jungo Highland 17:37
Their team time of 86:22 which is very close to their best time they posted at valley in 2007. Their 44 second spread is also very promising to their pursuit of a valley title this year.
