Highland Boys & Liberty Girls Win Season Finales

The Highland trio of Van Zandt, Thomas and Lewis are poised to pick up their third SEYL crown in as many years. This third one has been their easiest too.

In previous years: Bakersfield, East or Foothill have at least challenged them a bit but this year they have beating teams most of the time with a 15. Which means their top five are beating the other school's top runner.

In a few weeks, they should easily take the team title at the SEYL league meet. The drama will be in who wins the individual title and this may well be a race between Lewis and Van Zandt (photo).

Liberty boys finished the season with a 3 - 3 record.

On the girl's side there some unexpected results. First Barton of Liberty lost to Rodriguez of Highland and Liberty won the team race with a close 27 to 29. This gave Liberty a 4 - 2 record which ties them with Foothill for second. Highland ended the season with a 2 - 4 record.

Highland & Foothill at Bakersfield

What a difference a year makes. Last year this season ending meet matched undefeated Highland and the Drillers. The race was hard fought and Highland ended up winning 26 to 29 and ended the season undefeated in duels. The Drillers were 5 and 1 and took second overall behind Highland in the SEYL.

This year Highland has not had any competition and has been posting a lot of 15s on people (their scoring five beats the other school's first runner). They have been lead by senior Colin Lewis (16:32) who is also undefeated in duels this season as well. The are almost assured of yet another SEYL title and are looking to win valley after coming in second the past two seasons.

The Drillers on the other hand have gone from 5 and 1 to 0 and 5. Their postponed meet with Golden Valley will be a battle of the defeateds when it is contested. BHS did manage to escape getting the dreaded 15 to 50 score, where the other school's seven come in before your first runner. Tony Smith ran 18:06 to save them from this fate.

Foothill was lead by Erick Bautista (16:44) and appears to be missing its top runner Jose Lopez. The Trojans ended the year with a 4 - 2 duel meet record, which guarantees them second since only Liberty could tie them and their last meet is against Highland.

JV Highland 24, Foothill 34

On the girl's side, Sarah Baker continued her winning ways with a 19:24 clocking on her home course to lead her Driller's to a 5 - 0 record. With only Golden Valley in their way, the Drillers should have back to back undefeated duel meet seasons. At the SEYL league meet, they will be going for their second overall team title in three seasons and Sarah will be going for her third individual title.

Like the boys, the Lady Trojans are also 4 - 2 for the season and will be battling Liberty or Highland for second place overall in the SEYL. Liberty and Highland are 3 - 2 and have to make up their postponed meet this month. Highland has been lead all season by Rodriguez (20:02) and her team mates have been improving throughout the season.

Blair Slaton is the Fastest at Ming

By the time of the varsity races, the weather had turned comfortable. The poor underclassmen have to face
the heat and the daunting three mile course in the first meet of many of their lives. Why everyone runs 3 miles
at this season opening meet is a question that never gets answered. Year after year at the coaches meeting
after the season, they all agreed that only the varsity should run three miles.

Despite this decision, the EB Invite remains three miles for everyone. What I would like to see is make it a run
around the lake and on the backside of the lake, run on the trail instead of the bike path. This course would be
around 2 miles and year after year it would be the same. The 3 mile course has changed over the years, so
comparing times is difficult.

Another change that would be to make all the races by class like they do at many early season meets. Then
coaches would not have to put underclassmen on varsity and the competition for class bragging rights would
be interesting and would go on for four years. Plus everyone runs the same distance and it would be easy to
compare times.

But this is not the race we have, so here is what I saw.

The boys race played out in much the same manner as the girls race. Again it was a true team battle that
would come down to the team's fifth runner. The team race was also a contest between the young guns of
Stockdale versus the veterans of Highland. The trio of Van Zandt, Thomas and Lewis have been 1,2,3
knockout punch for years now but have placed second at the valley meet two years in a row. This is their
senior at Highland and they want a valley title.

Stockdale with Curtis Kelly (soph), soph Cameron Miller and much anticipated frosh Connor Fisher filling out a
squad with two veteran runners in Slaton and Burke are the highest ranked Kern County squad in division one.
So at the 1.7 mile point in the race, it was no surprise to see two Mustangs and two Scotsmen with Sandles
(Golden Valley) at the front of the race. Behind them was one from each school too.

In the last mile, Slaton took the lead and held on for the win in under 16 minute as he predicted. When I found
him with his family after the race, he was in his sweats and looked like he was waiting for his race to start.
Behind him was an exciting race for second between Lewis (Highland) and Kelly (Stockdale). Lewis came on
strong and when Kelly looked over his shoulder it was all over for him.

Behind them was Sandles for fourth place. Then the team competition got fierce Van Zandt took 5th for
Highland, Miller took 6th for Stockdale and was followed by Ivan (HHS). Then it went Stockdale and Highland
again. But Burke came in 15th and sealed the win for the Mustangs.

Team scores -- 1. Stockdale 33; 2. Highland 43; 3. Centennial 120; 4. East 122; 5. North 153; 6. Liberty 155;
7. Frontier 184; 8. Foothill 191; 9. Garces 215; 10. Golden Valley 275; 11. South 298; 12. Bakersfield 349.

Individual results -- 1. Slaton, St, 15:52; 2. Lewis, H, 16:01; 3. Kelly, St, 16:04; 4. Sandles, GV, 16:08; 5. Van

45th Annual Lake Tahoe Relay, June 13 2009

Race Preview:

2009 Race Website HERE.

2008 Noise Coverage HERE.

Over the years numerous teams have traveled to compete in this race. McFarland and Highland have sent teams and last year Bakersfield High did as well. Some local open teams have also competed there too. Most recently Bakersfield College and CSUB combine teams lead by Ryan Lucker have competed at this relay.

This year he is putting together two teams and I know McFarland will be there. Highland and Bakersfield will not be sending teams.

Why Not Go Big!

Before the meet, I heard that Jerrid wanted to make a statement at the Area meet and he did in the 800. Usually, he lets others handle the pace making and then he goes in for the kill on the homestretch. But from the gun he took the lead and never looked back.

When he hit the 4oo, his time was 54 seconds and at the 500 it looked like the hunter might be the hunted this time. The Highland boys were in his slipstream and looked like they were ready to pounce.

At this point Schwartz was out of the race and I wondered if something was wrong with him because before the start he was nursing his knee and looked to be in pain. By the end of the race, Schwartz ended up jogging in and finished last with Solis of Ridgeview. Then he left the track immediately, which is unusual for the gregarious Chris. Later in the evening he looked good in his win in the 3200 and ran the anchor league of the 4 x 400 so who knows what was going on

In the final 300, Jerrid increased his lead on the Highland athletes and posted the fastest time in the valley this year. Colin Lewis of Highland also posted a season best to go along with his second in the 1600 earlier in the evening.

800--1. Lewis, Ridge, 1:54.63; 2. Van Zandt, High, 1:57.16; 3.
Lewis, High, 1:58.49; 4. Burke, Stock, 2:00.12
