Stockdale Boys Ranked the Top Kern County Squad

Sort of odd that Stockdale takes the top spot considering how well McFarland and Ridgeview did at the Clovis Invite. Mcfarland won the small school's race and Ridgeview became the first Bakersfield squad in recent memory to break 84 minutes at Woodward. The great thing is all three will be at the Kern Championship on Halloween.

Ridgeview Remains Top Kern County Squad

This week was a bad week for many Kern County harriers. There were upsets at duel meets and rather poor performances at invites.

Injuries and the flu hit hard and this weekend the SAT took it's toll on the invites too. Every year athletes have to miss big invites to take those dreaded college entrance exams.

Week Six Rankings: Seven Kern Teams in the Top 20

After a successful weekend for some at the Clovis Invite, most of the local squads did not move much in the rankings. Kern squads are ranked 3rd, 5th and 6th in the valley and all are expected to compete at the Kern Invite on Halloween.

Until then, most teams will be running a few invites and gearing up for their league finals in early November.

The Wolf Pack Leads the Way

Fresh off their win at their home invite and many other wins this year, Ridgeview moves to number three in the overall valley rankings. Stockdale stays in 7th despite wining the Clovis West Invite and running well at Woodbridge.

Shafter jumped from 20th to 13th and recently placed second at the Wolf Pack Invite. Other Kern squads in the top 20 are Garces (16th), North (17th) and Highland (20th).

Week #4 (September 28)

Varsity Girls

Overall score last week

1. Buchanan 65 1
2. Clovis 166 2
3. Ridgeview 228 5 - Have been winning just about everything the enter from duel meets to invites.
4. Clovis East 246 3
5. Bullard 252 6
6. Madera South 312 4
7.Stockdale 323 7 - Great pack running squad without a front runner. Ran well at Woodbridge.
8. Clovis North 369 10
9. Mt. Whitney 413 8
10.Tulare 480 9
11. Firebaugh 487 12
12. Clovis West 490 11
13. Shafter 494 20 - Tied Ridgeview at McLane Invite and came in second to them at Wolf Pack Invite
14. Central Valley Christian 535 13
15. Sunnyside 561 16
16. Garces 610 17
17. North Bakersfield 657 NR - Lead by Moyer, this young keeps improving every week.
18. Mission Prep 672 NR
19.Golden West 709 18
20. Highland 715 NR - Coach Mayberry squads do not come out to play until it counts.

Division I - The Clovis and Fresno schools are so tough that it is doubtful any Kern team will make state in this division. Stockdale has a shot with their tightly bunch pack of runners but they will all have to drop some time to make it into the top three and go to state.

Interestingly 10th ranked Bakersfield has the most upside in making state if they could find a fifth runner. Lead by junior Sarah Baker, her and her three junior team mates (Emily Shuford, Gabby Lerma and Gracie Garcia) won a SEYL title in 2007, went undefeated in duels in 2008 and are undefeated in duels this year. Sarah has a great shot at making state as an individual (have to get in the top 12 or 15 in the race) and if they can get one other girl under 22, they might have a shot.

1. Buchanan 30 1
5. Stockdale 109 5
9. Centennial 270 8
10. Bakersfield 325 10

Division II - The past seasons Garces has been Monica Guzman but this season they are a team. They barely lost to the Drillers early in the season but have been winning duels ever since. This division usually sends the most Kern athletes to state as individuals and this maybe the case again this year. Besides Guzman, Liberty's Barton, Foothill's Fernandez and North's Moyer all have shots at making state. Plus other Highland and North girls maybe have a chance too.

1. Mt. Whitney 118 1
4. Garces 168 6
5. North (Bakersfield) 180 8
6. Highland 195 NR*
8. Liberty (Bakersfield) 230 7
9. Foothill 232 4

Division III - The Wolf Pack are defending valley champs and look like they will be repeating especially since they picked up some talented freshman.

1. Ridgeview 86 2
4. Shafter 175 4
5. Independence 279 8

Division IV

1. Firebaugh 109 1
2. McFarland 160 3
3. Taft 194 2

Kern Boy's Teams are on Top of the Charts

Week #4 (September 28) so mcfarland jump from number 5 to number 2 in the overall rankings complied by Larry Lung. They bumped ridgeview out of the second spot btw.

Another big mover was Stockdale who moved up 4 spots. the Mustangs have been on the road every weekend and have been putting in impressive times with their tightly bunched pack of five.

On Friday, Ridgeview will meet McFarland at the Golden West Invite for their rubber match. Stockdale ironically will stay in town and run the BC Open Invite starting at 11am at the Soccer Complex near Hart Park.

Varsity Boys

Overall score last week

1. Buchanan 63 1
2. McFarland 158 5 Returned the favor to Ridgeview by beating them at their invite.

14. Shafter 551 15 - Looked good at Wolf Pack Invite
15. Bullard 578 20
16. Wasco 605 17 - Shafter's main competition in the SSL
17. Redwood 605 16
18. East Bakersfield 620 19 After an early season lost to Highland they have been winning duals and skipping invites.
19. Golden West 629 14
20. Parlier 698 NR

Divisional Rankings compiled by Larry Lung, Central California Cross Country Chair

Division I - Buchanan is the 900 lb gorilla in this division and despite losing some great runners to grauation they are still the top team in the valley and one of the top teams in the state. Clovis West is ranked number two even though Stockdale won their invite last week. CW's top runners went to the Stanford Invite instead of running their own invite. despite getting roughed up by it's league mates, Centennial is ranked number 8.

1. Buchanan 27 1
2. Clovis West 57 2
3. Stockdale 70 4 - The Mustangs won a meet at Woodward & ran well at Woodbridge
8. Centennial 217 9 - Improving each meet but in a Tough league and division

Division II - Highland has had an easy time of it so far in the SEYL and has been racking up quite a few 15s along the way. They even scored a 15 on third ranked East, but since that meet East has been improving and hiding out on the weekends.

1. Highland 71 1 - Where they hope to be in November. Sat out Wolf Pack Invite due to illness & travel conflicts
3. East Bakersfield 134 5 - Improving each week but not running invites so far this season
8. North (Bakersfield) 184 8 - Same problem Centennial has.
9. Liberty (Bakersfield) 217 10 - Have not seen them lately.

Division III - After losing their invite to Mcfarland, the Wolf Pack blitzed the Frontier course on Wednesday. Baker went sub 15 and Garcia was not to far behind. Look for Shafter to make a move up the ranks soon but they have Madera South ahead of them and they are tough.

1. Ridgeview 72 1 - Defeated McFarland once this season and look to do it again. Plus big duel meet next week against Stockdale (both squads are undefeated)
5. Shafter 210 5 Did well at Wolf pack with a huge squad of athletes
6. Wasco 230 6
8. Foothill 343 8 Trojans also have a lot of athletes and as the season progresses some will step up and make an impact on varsity

Division IV - The Cougars have won the valley division four title almost every year and should do the same this year. Their goal is to get that elusive tenth state title and their training has been geared for that goal. But with a lost to Ridgeview at their own invite, they maybe focusing more on these early season battles.

1. McFarland 47 1 - Ranked number 2 overall in the valley and the only school in ages to break 85 minutes at Woodward. Losing to Ridgeview might have been the best thing for them
9. Taft 314 7
