Morro Bay Invite - 09.09.11

This old school meet with few frills but lots of competition was run in almost ideal conditions of overcast skies and 63-degree weather.   Run on a course that changes ever so slightly each year, depending on the tide, this year’s version was measured at 2.73 miles of varying terrains.  Starting on the grass of the baseball field, the course quickly loops the dirt track of Morro Bay before heading out through the one of a kind tunnel of trees to the soft sand.  After crossing the soft sand to the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean, the race heads north up the coast before once again crossing the soft sand.  At the two-mile mark, runners climb a sand dune before jumping on the bike path and heading back to the track for the finish.

Held at Morro Bay High School on Saturday, September 11th, this year's
running took place under cloudy skies The measurements taken from coaches previewing the course averaged 2.75 miles. Mile one is on good footing, mile two is challenging (beach) footing, and the final .75 miles is back on good footing, though the racers said the exit from the beach was really tough. As the day pressed on, the finishing times revealed the challenges of the record-less course. The rising tide confined the varsity runners to softer sand then the earlier race runners experienced.

Craig Varner (photo) came in 12th and was the top finisher (16:15) for the Centennial. His team mate Molly Pruett was the top girl in a time of 20:50 for 31st place. Jeremias Xancale was the Taft's top finisher in a time of 17:41 and Marina Johson was the top female for Taft.

Taft & Centennial Hit the Sand at the Morro Bay Invite

The Morro Bay Invitational was run under cloudy and cool conditions which lead to ideal racing conditions. The course, which changes yearly due to tide and dune conditions was measured at
roughly 2.6 miles. No team scores are kept at this fun and unique event.

In the boys race, Centennial's Eric Millan (So) had the fastest time of 16:04 (6:10 pace) and came in 16th overall. The top Taft athlete was freshman Phillip Taylor, who ran 17:57 for 81st place.
