Bakersfield at the 2010 Disneyland Half Marathon

Pismo is often called Bakersfield West and Disneyland maybe considered Bakersfield South especially at this year's running of the Disneyland Half Marathon. The Bakersfield Distance Project has over ten athletes competing and numerous FaceBook friends and others are competing there as well. Last year 93 Bakersfield athletes finished and three BDPers.

In 2010, Bakersfield had over 130 entrants. Once again Javier Cruz was our top male finisher. The 47 year old mailman ran 1:22:17 for 24th place overall. he was the Bakersfield runner at San Francisco and Los Angeles as well.

2. 42 year old Hayley Tobin ran 1:52:14 for 1014th place.
   
3. Bakersfield Distance Projecter Denni Jorgensen (47) was the third fastest female with a time of 1:55:04 and came in 1262nd place.
   
4. A second behind her was Paula Marroquin (38) who ran 1:55:05 for 1263rd place.
5. 41 year old Nancy Dennis ran 1:58:22 for 1620th place

Week Zero of the 2010 Season

The first week of September has arrived and I have no idea what is going on in the SWYL, SEYL or SYL besides who is in what league. The EB Invite has been pushed back a week (Sept. 15th) and league action is not expected till the last week of September.

I have heard the SWYL will have cluster meets instead of dual meets but can not get official word from the district. Plus I have heard nothing about the other two leagues. It would be nice to know the dates and who is running against who so I could promote and cover the action.

So if anyone has an official schedule, I would love to have a copy. Be nice to have a copy of the rules on how league championships will be decided too.

On a more positive note, CSUB had a good meet at Malibu!

On Wednesday the first, CSUB started off their season with a trip to Pepperdine for the Malibu Seaside Open 5k.

MALIBU, Calif. - Running what CSUB Head Coach Robert Boyles deemed an aggressive race, senior Arianna Celis (Perris/Riverside CC) took top individual honors as the Roadrunner cross country team split a tri-meet with Pepperdine and the University of San Diego Wednesday evening in Malibu.

CSUB defeated San Diego 15-47 but fell to the host Waves 24-33.

"I knew we were going to have one of our best teams ever, but we did better than I thought we would our first time out this season," said Boyles. "To be honest, three of our top five were sick last week, so I didn't know what to expect tonight. I very happy with the way we competed."

Celis, of course, stole the headline Wednesday, navigating the hilly Malibu 5K course in 18:54.96 to defeat Pepperdine's Aneasha Lawrence by 15 seconds.

"Her strategy was to be aggressive and put the hammer down, and that's what she did," said Boyles. "She ran a great race and led all the way."As pleased as he was with Celis' effort, he reserved his highest praise for sophomore Cecilia Lopez (North HS), who finished sixth overall at 19:56.48.

"Cecilia made a huge improvement," said Boyles of Lopez, who ran 21:19 on the course as a freshman. "It was her best race ever."

In addition to Celis and Lopez, the 'Runners got top 10 finishes from Casey Glassey (Loma Linda/Riverside CC), who placed fifth in 19:50.54, and junior Judith Mata (Oxnard/Rio Mesa HS) who finished 10^th in 20:32.25.

CSUB will take 10 days off before returning to action Saturday, Sept. 11 at the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational.

Thursday 09.02.10:

On the high school scene, school has been in session for two weeks now and the main theme has been the heat. After a mild summer, the heat has hit us. So training has been curtailed or hampered.

During the summer most teams run early in the morning or in the evening and then school starts and teams have to run in the afternoon. Along with the heat, bodies have to get use to being at school all day too. Lastly the heat canceled some of the scrimmages that were to be held this week.

From what I have heard, most of the KHSD meets scheduled for Thursday were canceled do to the heat and bad air quality by the district. One meet that went off as scheduled was the scrimmage at McFarland.

In preparation for their Jim White Invite on Sept. 18th, the Cougars hosted and evening meet on their campus and nearby park on Thursday the 2nd. In the past, their 5k course consisted of three laps on this course. On the 18th they plan on hosting the central sections first evening meet under the lights. On Thursday the action was hot in both the boys and girls races.

Girls - Shafter 24 Mcfarland 41

Arvin and Ceaser Chavez were also at the meet. In the girls race, it was very close with a mile to go and then Shafter took over. I was told a Shafter girl won the varsity race.


Boys - Shafter 29, McFarland 32, Wasco 46

The boys race appears very close and the win went to Shafter senior Jesus Villalpando who out kicked McFarland sophomore Erick Garcia. Times were reported in the 16s on the 3.2 mile course (it was longer then a 5k).

Summer Series Pizza Party and Awards

A good size crowd came out tonight for pizza and the summer series awards. This past summer was the biggest turnout yet and it is a good thing that they all do not show up for this ceremony. The evening started off with a report on how big this summer turnout was and how the challenges were met.

It was a nice touch to acknowledge the key volunteers that make this series such a success. Plus the Track Club acknowledge and gave out "Volunteer of the Year" awards to Stephen Humphreys for his amazing trail maintenance work, Peter Wonderly for bringing out his sound equipment and yours truly for photography and blogging. All the volunteers and runners received $25 gift certificates to Action Sports as well.

This race use to be the same weekend as the Rock To Pier but now has been moved back a month to August. This date works better because so many from Kern County go to the R2P. Plus if they keep this date, it is right before school starts which means more people are likely to be in town.

River Walk was crowded and before 7pm the parking lot was full. This had more to do with the wedding being held there then the race. Adding to the early crowd was the inaccurate race start times on the BTC website:

"2k fun run at 7:30 pm around the park and the 5k & 10k on the bike path at 8:00 pm." Turns out that this information was on the BPD website too.

So many showed up super early for a race that often does not start on time. With the heat we had, I am glad the race started at a little after 8:30pm. By race time, the temperature had dropped and there was a nice breeze. The breeze turned into a good wind that was in our faces on the way back to River Walk.

After the National Anthem, they held the 2k run for the kids which seemed to have fewer runners then in the past. Speaking of numbers, I hear there were 500 to 600 in the 5k/10k race. This large group assembled on the bike path to head east on the out and back course.

Just before the race, a good breeze started and the police helicopters flew over head to make some very interesting shadow play. Then a few minutes after 830pm the race started with a mad rush into the darkness. Heading east was nice because the moon was on our right and quite bright plus many of the businesses we went by were lite as well.

As I was heading out, I soon saw the BPD motorcyle heading my way with it's lights flashing and one runner following it closely. CSUB's Eddy Lee was leading the way and looked fast. The image of him running fast in the ligh and shadows along with the police lights was one I wish I had a camera to capture but mine shoot poorly in the dark.

Lee was followed by his team mate Ryan Lucker and then a stream of other runners. In the end Lee went under 156 minutes for the first time with a posting of 15:59. Lucker 16:21 for second and CSUB's Lina Nunez was the first women. Lucker and Lee are doing competing for CSUB but have plans to continue their running careers at a high level in the future.

In the 10k, Stockdale's Cameron Miller and David Bacus were running stride for stride with their motorcycle escort when they passed me with less then 2 miles to go. In the end, David took the win over the junior to be Mustang. Miller was the only local D1 athlete to qualify for last year's state cross country meet.

On the women's side, former CSUB harrier Erica Silva won the 10k in a time of 42:55.

2010 Girls Cross Country Preview

Just heard that the Dual Meet System is being replaced by Cluster Meets in the SWYL. The SWYL will have three cluster meets and the a league meet. Theses meets will start at the end of September.

This information came from Bakersfield, Stockdale and Centennial. According to them this decision was recently made by the ADs and the meets will be hosted by Bakersfield, Independence and Stockdale.

The status of SYL and SEYL dual meets is unchanged as of 08.16.10. The reason I am reporting this information is one it is news and two if you like or do not like the changes, now is the time to make you voice heard.

This year is the first year that we will have three leagues here in Bakersfield. Long ago we had just the SYL, then it split into the SEYL and the SWYL and now we will have the SYL, SEYL and the SWYL. Besides the league changes, there were some division changes as well. Sadly our section does not do it by population only. For some reason they decided to take in past performance in determining a school's placement.

In 2007, Centennial won the boys and girls Valley D-2 titles and was rewarded with a move to D-1. This year nine time D-4 state champ McFarland boys have been moved to D-3.

Below, I have listed each division with the local schools and what league they are now in. The results shown were last year's valley results.

Girls Cross Country

D-1
BAKERSFIELD (SWYL) - This is the final year for the four Drillers who started together in 2007. They won a SEYL league title in 2007 & 2009 and their leader Sarah Baker has been SEYL champ all three years. The whole 2009 squad returns as seniors but the Drillers have always lacked a fifth girl which leads to poor results at the valley meet. They were 7th in 2009

Last year Sarah did qualify for state in the super tough D-1 and this year she looks to be a four time league individual champ but will have a more competition this year with the new SWYL Power League. Stockdale has amazing team depth and a couple athletes who could vie for the individual title as well.

CENTENNIAL (SWYL) - The Golden Hawks are looking to improve this season but their top two runners did graduate. Jorey Braughton is now running for CSUB and Margaret Martinez is running for BC. This leaves Chloe Carlson as their top returner. What makes her unique is she is a sprinter who qualified for state in the 200 has a freshmen.

Of course Centennial has a tradition sprinters being good cross country runners. In 2008 Ashlee Thomas won the 400 and 800 at the valley track meet and she often ran well in the 200 as well. She now runs for BYU.

This is Coach Vondre Armour's second year and he reports that he has a large team that has been training hard this summer. He will find out how good they are early because their first dual meet of the year is against Stockdale. last year they came in 5th at the SWYL league meet.

STOCKDALE (SWYL) - The Mustangs are the team to beat locally and I doubt anyone will. Their top 6 return this year and their spread was less than a minute. Plus every year they pick up a fast freshmen or two. Last year it was Patel who lead them most of the year to an undefeated dual meet season and a win at the SWYL league meet.

At valley they came in 4th in the super fast D-1 and were only 3 points out of third place. In track Haney came on strong in the 3200 and was in the low elevens and gave Driller Sarah Baker a run for her money. So this year's new SWYL league meet should be a good one.

NORTH (SEYL) - Coach Huens's squad was big last year and came on strong at the end of the year. At SWYL meet last year, their top runner Moyer came in third overall and her team came in third behind Stockdale and Ridgeview. This year they move to the SEYL and should be the top ranked team in that league.
