Mount Whitney 2 Andy Noise 0

In 2009, I got 2/3rds of the way up the 99 switchbacks and swore I would not try to hike Mount Whitney in one day ever again. I wrote the following blog right after that experience. At the time I felt it was the hardest thing I had ever done but 2010 was Hors Catégorie which means "beyond categorization".

In 2009, I went about 8 miles up and reached over 13,000 feet. This year I hiked the entire 99 switchbacks and reached Trail Crest and entered the Sequoia National Park. (13,777 feet). The view was amazing and worth the effort to get there. But then things got serious then.

How I got to Trail Crest started almost a year ago after I got over my first attempt and decided if I trained harder I might be able to summit in one day. Since that day, almost every workout I did had Whitney as it's focus. I tried to walk every where no matter the conditions or how tired I was. I would tell myself that Whitney would be harder and just kept going.

Knowing I was very weak in other areas, I started attending Joe Petersen's Building Better Bodies Boot Camp as often as I could. I know it helped me with my agility and strengthen my core which would help on the downhill sections. Last year before Whitney, I started the Bakersfield Distance Project with Joe and this helped me put in even more miles and got me back into doing marathons.

Often I would walk to our long runs at the Bluffs, do the workout and then walk home. I would leave my house before 6am and not get back till 1pm. Then walk that evening too. I logged at least 70 miles a week and did over 100 miles in a week three times. I walked in all kinds of weather and often when I was exhausted. I remember doing a 22 miler with the BDP and then eating lunch and then taking Blanca for a 4 mile walk.

Just this year I did the 26.6 mile BUMR, the LA Marathon, San Diego Marathon and the San Francisco Marathon. Plus I walked 50 miles at the Relay for Life. So I had the endurance but I knew the steep rocky trails would get me in the end. Because of my size the steep stuff slows me down a lot.

I am like one of those semi-trucks going up the Grapevine. I can haul on the flat or moderately hilly stuff but steep is just a matter of physics. The old F=MA rules the day. Force equals Mass times Acceleration or in this case, Acceleration equals Force divided by Mass. Which means you need a lot of Force to overcome the Mass to get any Acceleration. This is why a sports car can fly up the Grapevine and the Mack truck goes so slow.

This slowness also comes into play going downhill too. Just like the Grapevine, the big trucks are forced to hit the brakes hard so they don't runaway. Again F=MA rules the day and it takes a lot of energy to safely go down the treacherous rocky trails of Whitney. Size also makes it hard to move quickly and makes the descent even more dangerous. You can not go jumping from uneven step to uneven rock as nimbly as one's lighter counterparts.

Now slowness is not an issue in most endurance events except when there are artificial time limits. At Whitney there are real and artificial time limits. The real ones are the afternoon storms and darkness. The artificial one is the 24 hour permit. Now I know I could do Whitney in a two or three day backpacking and may do that in the future but for now I want to do it in one day.

So I put in the training but had little hiking training mainly do to my schedule and not liking to travel. To make up for the lack of trails, I tried to hit the trails at the Panorama Bluffs a couple times a week. Though the trails at Whitney are much rockier, steeper and longer, at least I got some kind of trail work in.

Also a month ago Diana and I wogged a 24 miler on Sunday and then did the 16 mile Half Dome hike on Monday. This was a tough double and some of the Half Dome ascents and descents are similar to Whitney. So when Jeri contacted me last Monday that she had an extra permit, I was ready to go. Or so I thought.

On Tuesday, I decided to shoot the BTC Summer Series 5.0 and then walk home. I had planned this before I got a permit but still decided to do it to test out my headlamp and get one hard workout before Whitney. That morning, I coached run camp and then did my Yokuts & Bagels walk for about 12 miles. That night I ended up doing 13 plus miles in the dark and it felt pretty easy. So I knew I was fit and I decided to take it easy the rest of the week.

My 2010 Whitney experience started when I woke up at 6am Saturday for run camp at the Bluffs. On schedule was a Double Hilla Killa which usually I would do after I walked there and I would have walked home after it. But on Saturday, I only did one Killa Hilla because i was heading to Whitney that afternoon. The workout went great and everyone really killed the course. Blanca even did the whole thing with me (her first).

Then, I took her and Nicholas (he did the one Killa Hilla) to Zorbas for breakfast. Now it was about noon and I was antsy to get going so I packed off and headed to Whitney Portal around 1pm to meet Jeri and pick up my permit. I should have done what I planned to do and took a nap till 3 or 4pm and then drove to Whitney but I was not tired and just wanted to get going.

The drive to Whitney is a dull one but I do like driving by Red Rock Canyon and at least there was light traffic and I made good time. It is amazing how the only stations that come in loud and clear out there are either religious or spanish.

Around 4pm, I made it to Lone Pine and the place was busy. Every hotel was full and the streets were bustling. i stopped for a quick bite to eat and then I headed up to Whitney Portal to find Jeri who had our hiking permits. As luck would have it i found her rather easily and we spent some time talking about what our plans were for Mount Whitney.

She was planning on leaving around 3am and hoped to complete the first couple miles in the dark and get to the first difficult section at dawn. This is what my group did last year and it is a good plan of attack because the first miles are pretty easy to do with a headlamp and you have company along the way. Leaving this early should give you time to summit and get back down before it gets dark again. Which we did last year except we turned around at the 8 mile point of the 11 mile hike and got to the cars before dark.

Knowing that I go slow up the steep stuff, I had a plan of leaving at midnight so I would not have to descend in the dark if I made the summit. Going uphill in dark is not so bad even if the footing is bad. So I figured I could go slow and bank some distance up the hill. This meant walking in the dark for 5 hours by myself but I figured it was doable.

In the past, I have proven to myself that I can stay up for a couple days and still function pretty well. The year before I was up for 40 hours straight when I did Whitney and this year I walked the entire 24 hour Relay for Life and felt find with no sleep (I covered 50 miles). Plus I figured I could take a quick nap at trail camp if needed.

6.3 miles: Trail Camp, a good place to rest before the grueling 96 switchbacks to Trail Crest. (12,039 feet)

So midnight was the plan but before I left home, I read a posting about starting the climb even earlier. One can hike the first 2.7 miles to the Lone Pine Lake trail crossing without a permit and so one could start earlier.

2.7 miles: Cross Lone Pine Creek. Shortly after crossing, trail forks to Lone Pine Lake on left, right continues towards summit. (9,980 feet)

You just needed a permit to enter the Whitney zone and the day permit is valid at midnight. So you could hike to this point and wait for midnight. I figured it would take me two hours to get to that point and decided to leave at 10pm.

While this strategy would give me the best shot at making the summit, it could also get me in trouble. Sure I would get up higher before I needed to turn around to avoid the afternoon storms but it meant my day would be even longer than normal. More time on my feet, more time at altitude and more time out on the mountain. This meant more time for something to go wrong.

In retrospect, one should probably leave at 3am at the earliest and just go as high as you can. If it means not getting to top in a day, that just means you need to make it a backpacking trip. But since I do not like camping and with my size adding at backpack into the mix means hauling over 300 pounds up the hill which is impossible with the terrain up there.

But I had sealed my fate and decided to go at 10pm (I told everyone beforehand I was going at midnight.) So I went back to Lone Pine, ate some dinner and waited to start my ascent. At 10pm, I left my car (never did fall asleep) and started walking towards the trailhead. As I neared I noticed a truck stop in the middle of the road and four of five headlamps too. Then they all shouted at me "There is a bear to your right!".

Not what you want to hear before you have not even started. Of course my feelings on bears are the same as sharks. If you want to surf it is their home, if you want to hike it is their home. I try not to do anything to dumb and hope for the best. If either wants to attack me they can and there is not much I can do to stop them except not entire their homes. If they do attack I will fight but when I am in their homes I just do not worry about them.

So I just looked over and did not see anybody and walked past the other headlamps and started my hike. The weather was perfect and the first miles of the travel are fairly easy. I crossed a small creek and then the larger one with the logs. Occasionally, a group passed me going downhill but no one was going up. Most asked me how far they had to go and most looked beat. I should have looked at their faces and turned around with them and went home but I just kept going.

Before I got to the Whitney zone, I heard something moving in the woods above me. Now that I was pass the streams it was super quiet so I could hear everything. At first I did not want to see what was there but as I rounded a switchback I flashed my headlamp into the darkness and to my great pleasure, all I saw was a doe. Finally I crossed the last stream and made it to the Whitney zone at midnight which was when my permit was valid.

2.7 miles: Cross Lone Pine Creek. Shortly after crossing, trail forks to Lone Pine Lake on left, right continues towards summit. (9,980 feet)

Now I had to begin the first difficult section which unlike the first section is much steeper and rockier. In the dark, this section was slow going and this would become an issue as the night progressed. Spending so much time up high will eventually bite you.

After a mile, I reached Outpost Camp and could see a few tents and wished I was in one trying to sleep instead of wandering around in the dark by myself.

3.8 miles: Outpost Camp with Thor Peak dominating the view. (10,360 feet)

2010 Boys Cross Country Preview

Just heard that the Dual Meet System is being replaced by Cluster Meets in the SWYL. The SWYL will have three cluster meets and the a league meet. Theses meets will start at the end of September.

This information came from Bakersfield, Stockdale and Centennial. According to them this decision was recently made by the ADs and the meets will be hosted by Bakersfield, Independence and Stockdale.

The status of SYL and SEYL dual meets is unchanged as of 08.16.10. The reason I am reporting this information is one it is news and two if you like or do not like the changes, now is the time to make you voice heard.

This year is the first year that we will have three leagues here in Bakersfield. Long ago we had just the SYL, then it split into the SEYL and the SWYL and now we will have the SYL, SEYL and the SWYL. Besides the league changes, there were some division changes as well. Sadly our section does not do it by population only. For some reason they decided to take in past performance in determining a school's placement.

In 2007, Centennial won the boys and girls Valley D-2 titles and was rewarded with a move to D-1. This year nine time D-4 state champ McFarland boys have been moved to D-3.

Below, I have listed each division with the local schools and what league they are now in. The results shown were last year's valley results.

Boys D-1:

BAKERSFIELD (SWYL) - In June of 2009, the entire varsity squad graduated and the Drillers were back to where they were in 2006 for the most part. With no veterans returning, the Drillers went from 5 - 1 in the SEYL to 1 - 5 and took its lumps in the valley meet.

Like 2006, they had a young squad who improved through the season and are back this year. Kevin Scrivano and Evan Bowman are their top returners and have been doing well in local races this summer and placed well in a 5k in San Francico.

5 68 Robert Amidon 927 FR 70 20:46

CENTENNIAL (SWYL) - As mentioned before, the Golden Hawks won Valley titles in 2007 and it was great retirement present for Coach Randy Jones. In 2008, they were moved to D-1 and had a new coach and then in 2009 they got another. Coach Vondre Armour is now coaching his second season and reports that he has a large team that has been training well this summer.

Vondre of course is a former Driller who won a state 800 title back in the day and hopes to bring back the days of Coach Jones this season. In 2009, he too had a young squad and they are all returning for the most part. His top two runners are Eric Millan and Craig Varner who look to improve on their 9th out of 10 finish as a team at valley this year.

STOCKDALE (SWYL) - In the SWYL this year youth is the word and the Mustangs have it in droves every year. Plus these youngsters are fast too. Last year Stockdale just missed making it to the state meet as a team. They came in 4th and were 18 points behind Clovis West. They laost to Ridgeview in league action but it was a very close race.

In 2009, they and Ridgeview were the first Bakersfield squads to break 85 minutes on the Woodward course in decades. This year they maybe the first Bakersfield D-1 squad to make it to state as a team. They only lose Blair Slaton and will be lead juniors Cameron Miller and Curtis Kelly. Miller qualified for state as an individual athlete and Kelly has been a top ranked age group runner for years.

Both have been training hard this summer and will be surrounded by a well balanced squad of returners plus they always seemed to get a freshman or two every year.

Boys D-2

EAST (SEYL) - The Blades have had some good teams over the past couple seasons and always peak for the championship season. They often disappear during the regular season to focus on training which maybe a good thing since many local teams seem to be burned out by Novemeber. They are losing a couple runners but seem to find new ones every year. Their top runner, Moses will be a junior this year and he qualified for state last year.

6 ( 43) Charlie Zaragoza 89 JR 44 18:10

7 ( 48) Moss Travis 91 SR 49 18:20

FRONTIER (SWYL) - Looks like they will be returning their entire valley squad from last year and every year the Titans have a large number of athletes on their rooster. If their top 5 couple improve by a minute or so they would have a very good senior year.

14. 385 FRON-B/Frontier - Bakersfield ( 18:25 1:32:01)

7 (137) Chris Corral 762 JR 144 19:38

GARCES (SEYL) - With the graduation of multiple year state qualifier O'Malley, the Rams do not have a clear cut leader. Plus much of their valley squad has graduated so there will be a new group running this year. I do know that they have been training lately and have a large turnout.

HIGHLAND (SEYL) - The power trio of Van Zandt, Lewis and Turner have lead the Scots to SEYL titles and a number of bridesmaid finishes at the valley meet as well. They have now graduated but coach Mayberry always has a large turnout every year and knows how to get his runners ready for the championship season.

In 2010, they should be lead by Ivan Esquivias who has been an outstanding 4 or 5th man over the past two seasons. Their main SEYL competition should come from East this year.

2. 90 HIG-B/Highland - Bakersfield ( 17:11 1:25:52)

7 ( 58) Daniel Espinosa 369 SR 59 18:48

LIBERTY (SWYL) - From what I can find the patriots did not field a team at the valley meet. They did come in 4th in the SEYL league meet last year and have a number of returning athletes.

NORTH (SEYL) - Coach Brian Huens had a large young squad last year and will have 6 of his 7 valley squad back. They will be lead by senior Tobias Lopez lat year they were 8th at valley and third at the SWYL league meet. This year they will be in the SEYL and will be up against some traditionally good squads like Highland, East and Foothill.

GOLDEN VALLEY (SYL) - From what I can tell the Bulldogs did not field a scoring team at valley last year but senior to be Daymon Sandles did qualify fo the state meet.

INDEPENDENCE (SWYL) - I believe this is the first year that Independence will have seniors. They will be lead by senior Dwayne Falco as they join Yosemite league action.

Mc FARLAND (ESL) - They have racked up 9 state titles and too many valley titles to count. In the past five years they have placed no worst then 5th at the state meet in pursuit of their tenth title. For all of these great achievements, they are being rewarded by being moved up to D-3.

Their population is way below the 1250 limit of D-4 but that does not seem to matter to the powers that be in the Central Section. All I know is the rest of the D-4 schools in the state should send the Central Section Czar a nice Christmas present for moving McFarland out of D-4.

The good thing is 5 of their top 7 are returning from their second place state team. they are lead by sophomore Erik Garcia who won the D-4 title last year. Until last year, no other Kern County had broken 85 minutes besides Mcfarland at Woodward Park. Of course McFarland does this all the time with times under 83 minutes.

The San Francisco Marathon Experience

This was my third attempt at doing the San Francisco Marathon and I am glad I finally did the race.

A number of years ago (when my 12 year old was a baby) I took the family on vacation there and had signed up for the race but we were having such a good time visiting the city for the first time as a family that I ended up blowing off the race.

It was a good idea because I was not ready to run the race and was pretty exhausted by race day. travling with three small children will do that to you.

Then last year I took my two oldest sons on a tour of the U.C. campuses and was signed up for the full but ended up running the half instead. Visiting UCSC, UC Davis, UC Merced and Berkeley proved to be an enjoyable but exhausting experience.

But in 2010, I finally did the full and posted a good time for me and was very pleased that my last 10k was my fastest section of the race. I credit my performance to a lot better training and trying to limit my pre-race exertions as much as possible. Of course that can be difficult when visiting a place like San Francisco.

Our trip began on Friday morning around 8am with the always fun drive up the valley. At least the miles go by rather quickly and we only had to make one pit stop.

BTC Summer Series #5 on 08.03.10

Summer Series 5 was the hottest yet but many ran faster then they had before. There were a lot of athletes in before 7:30 pm and the new two chute system worked.

The new two chute system and Stephen Humphreys trail maintenance alleviated the crush and they finish line back up too.

Taking the points lead after the 5th race was Blanca Anderson who placed 15 in this race and now has a total of 59 points. In 2006, Her oldest son won and her middle son took second in the points race.

There are a couple people who could catch her. 4th place John Banales has a two race score of 53 and 5th place Greg Tesch has a two race total of 38. Others with low two race scores are:
  • Carla Tafoya 29
  • Yvonne Lopez 32
  • Mike Henderson 42
  • Jeri Shea 34
  • Joseph Sanchez 50
  • Christian Saenz 55
So it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Race Preview:

BTC Summer Series #5 will be held on Tuesday August 3rd and it should have another large crowd. Summer vacations are coming to an end and many local high schools have started training together for the upcoming cross country season.

Because of the unprecedented crowds, there has been problems with the finish line backing up and people not getting to run to the finish line and get an accurate time.

Besides the timing and place issues, there has been problems with pushing, shoving and cutting in the line. These matters have been taking seriouly by the track club and they how to implement a two chute system at this race and hopefully not have the problems they have had in the past.
Also helping matters is the Bakersfield Distance Project's lead Sherpa Stephen Humphreys who has gone out to the course numerous times in the past week and done trail maintenance! so the trail should be wider and have a lot less rocks and weeds.

All of these new measures will be needed because I predict many schools will be out in full force at this race and the 6th one as well. This week on the bike path, I saw runners from CSUB, Garces, BHS, Stockdale and Centennial.

Speaking of local high school cross country, Foothill will be hosting a 5k on their campus on Saturday August 28th. This event is the Joel Mena Memorial Scholarship Run and it will start at 8am.

Then on Saturday Sept. 25th Ridgeview will be hosting their 5th Annual Wolf Pack Invite at River Walk and their will be an open 5k race at 7:30am. So you can test yourself on the same course that the high school athletes will run on later in the day. One should really stick around and watch Kern County's top teams compete at this invite.

But I digress. In Summer Series action, the overall title standings are starting to take shape. The leader after five races is Veasna Sok who has 139 points and is followed by first time Summer Series participant Blanca Anderson who has 145. Right now tenth place is held by Joesph Sanchez with 273 points (Prizes are awarded to the top ten and last year the winners got nice BTC duffel bags.)

Rounding out the the top 20 are several current and past Bakersfield Distance Projecters. Leading the group is Blanca in second, Rod Nance in 7th (224 pts), Nicholas Anderson in 13th (292 pts), and David Plyler in 20th (322 pts). David recently PRed in the San Francisco Marathon in a time of 3:26:43.

Also in the top 20 are a number of friends (They train with the BDP from time to time.) of the Bakersfield Distance Project. In 6th was Mike Holmes (213 pts), Barbara Maddox is 8th (256 pts) and Norma Diaz is 17th place (306 pts).

Lastly in the Best Scratch Times competition, there appears to be a few errors at the top of both lists. In the men's division, they have an 8 year old leading the way with a 16:05 which can not be right. Cesar Mireles (A former Golden Valley harrier who now runs for Rocky Mountain College.) appears to have the fastest time of the summer with a 16:25 and the top high school athlete is Stockdale junior Cameron Miller (16:50).

In the women's competition, I believe the top two times are wrong and am certain that the 2nd best time is wrong because I know her. so the women's leader is CSUB's Ariana Celis with a 19:16 which is one second better then her Roadrunner team mate Casey Glassey.

Behind them is Bakersfield Distance Projecter Shawna Roundtree with a time of 20:46. Shawna ran for BC a couple years ago and is training for a fall marathon where she hopes to beat her PR. Following her are a number of CSUB runners: Lina Nunez (21:10), Pam Boyles (Former CSUBer and coaches wife with a time of 21:15), Monica Guzman (21:18), Ashley Nolasco (21:49) and Judith Mata (21:53).

In the high school competition, I am not sure who the fastest is. In 13th is Esthefani Perez with a time of 21:56 and I think she runs for North. I do know that Carli Preston (22:23) in 18th place will be a sophomore at Shafter this fall.

In front of her is 13 year old Andie Condie who is visiting family her in Bakersfield before returning to the Middle East where her father works. Last summer her family visit Bakersfield and ran a number of our local races. Tragically, her brother was the runner who got hit by the car at the Howlin at the Moon race last year. I am pleased to report that Tyler recently graduated from high school and hiked Mount Kilimanjaro.

Full Marathon

Just did a search of Bakersfield finishers and our top finisher was Javier Cruz (56th OA) who ran 2:58:26. In second was former Foothill Trojan Robert Meyer who started over 76 minutes after the gun and ran through thousands posted a 3:10:32 in his first ever marathon (151st OA) . He passed me on the Golden Gate Bridge... to give you idea of how far back he was.

Behind him was my third former Driller to run a marathon. Andrew Edquist ran 3:21:21 for 291st OA. In fourth was David Plyler who PRed in his 3rd marathon in a time of 3:26:43.

On the women's side, Hope Roe barely beat out Bakersfield Distance Projecter Denni Jorgensen , both were in the 45 to 49 year age group as well. Hope ran 4:11:10 and Denni ran 4:12:18

Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Fun Run

2010 marks the 41st running of the Rock to Pier Fun Run. The run/walk is approx. 6 miles in length and takes place on the hard packed sand from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier.

Every year hundreds of Kern County athletes compete in this event and place well in it. Last year, CSUB's Lina Nunez (8th) and Ryan Lucker (4th) were the top Bakersfield finishers. Taft's 2008 Steeplechase Olympian Billy Nelson broke the thirty year old record last year as well.
