-- East's Angel Valdez was fourth in the Division II girls race, clocking 19:23, and Garces' Jamie Penner was sixth in 19:31. Shafter's girls took second as a team, led by Emily Enns' fifth-place finish (19:27), so the Generals also qualified for state.

-- In Division III, McFarland and Liberty both qualified as teams. Joining Berry and Ayala as individual qualifiers were Ridgeview's Fernanda Aguilar (seventh in 19:42) and Independence's Jenny Chumbe (11th in 20:12).

Other boys state qualifiers

-- Joining West High's team as Division III qualifiers were: Foothill's Chris Garcia (fourth in 16:28) and Sam Magana (fifth in 16:28), plus Arvin's Pedro Cruz (eighth in 16:36).

At the front of the pack in the boys race should be Stockdale's Blake Haney, seeking to roll to another sectional crown, hopefully as a prelude to his first state cross country title nine days later.
"The main goal (Thursday) is to put forth a good effort and help my team do well. Am hoping the team can make state," said Haney, who last June became only the second non-senior in California meet history to sweep the boys 1600- and 3200-meter crowns in the sport of track and field. "If I can win the race, that helps our chances even more."

Urban Trails

I often listen to people go on and on about running on the trails and how they can stand the thought of running on the streets.

Well I do both and I think the streets can help your trail running both mentally and physically. You have to be alert on the streets just like you do on the trails and the hard surfaces will toughen your body.

Plus running the streets is like trail running in that it is not a steady run. You have to stop and go, avoid obstacles, chose the right path and some times make difficult moves on the fly.

So next time you can't be on your beloved trails, do some urban exploring!

The Sean O'Brien 50M/50k/26M was created after the original Ray Miller course had suffered a devastating fire in early May. The area was badly burned, and in my opinion needed time to heal. I was inspired to still bring a solid, competitive, and tough 50 mile/50k race to southern California in early winter. I also had a deep desire to still have this sort of race in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains. The result was the creation of one of the most epic race courses to date on the West Coast. Personally mapped out and created by my close friend Sean O'Brien it only seemed fair to name the race after him. The race course consists of beautiful single track on the Backbone Trail, miles of sweeping ocean views, and over 11,000+ feet of gain in the 50 mile, and 6400+ feet of gain in the 50k. The Back Country trails of the Santa Monica Mountains are breathtaking, and some parts rarely touched. I am honored to be bringing such an epic event to the Ultra Running community, and I look forward to you all participating in this race! The event will have three distances to choose from: 50 Mile, 50k, and 26.2.

The 50 Mile race is now part of the 2014 Montrail Ultra Cup. Note that the TOP THREE men and women will get auto-entry into Western States in 2014.

Join the Bakersfield Distance Projecters for one of the best first ultras. The course is one big loop in the desert with great aid stations and it is very runnable. The entry fee is really reasonable and you get a nice tech shirt, finisher medal, raffle (That is done while you run.) and pizza and drinks at the finish. They also have an early start (6am).

A few years ago they moved this event to the evening. Do not know why. This was the 31st I believe and I miss when it ran from Beach Park, down Elm to the Garces Circle, down 34th street to Q street to Columbus and then back to the park via the bike path.

Now the race is out and back on the bike path (YAWN) from River Walk. Almost exactly like the Howlin at the Moon race. Most did the 5k today and I decided to walk and be the sweeper for the 10k. I took some video but they are probably pretty bad because I was walking fast and the light was low.

The results will be posted HERE eventually.

The drugs don't work ....

Well I went to the doctor and I was a mess with the venous ulcers from 60 hours of sitting at Javelina. But my blood pressure was the doctor's be concern.

If you saw my legs you would think that is the major problem but it isn't. So now I am on BP meds and feel awful.

Before meds I could walk for hours and now I can hardly get out of bed. If this is normal, I rather be abnormal. Sure I might die of a stroke or heart attack but.

Hopefully we will find a happy medium but I doubt it especially since I had more tests today and I am sure I will have more meds in the future.

So for now I can't run (but can walk) and the sores on my legs are painful but at least the itchy feet have gone away for now.

Getting old sucks.

Why?

I have been migrating endurance events competitively since I was 15 years old. Back in the spring of 1979, I quit baseball and went out for track and ran the mile.

From the start endurance sports were easy for me and I never asked why or needed a why to finish an event. At the end of the season I broke 5 minutes for the mile and was hooked for life.

I quickly took up road running and moved up to ten mile races and beyond. Sure there were times in a race that I hurt but I never felt like I could not continue.

Within a year I was running the Bakersfield marathon (February of 1980) and again the WHY never came up. Sure I blew up around mile 20 (how cliche) but it was from a water logged stomach and never thought I couldn't finish.

I just slowed down and was disappointed with my 3:01 finish. That was in 1980 and it took me 30 plus years to confront the WHY.

This past weekend on the 2013 EC 100, I meet WHY head on.
