Since its inception in 1927, the West Coast Relays has been one of the most exciting meets in track and field history. With a new world class track (Mondo) in place the meet should provide fast times. Last year forty schools were represented totaling over 700 athletes; this year’s meet promises to be the same. On Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Buchanan High School the tradition of the West Coast Relays caries on. Finishlynx timing w...ill be used for all running events. Three levels of competition (invitational, seeded and open) provide true excitement in all events. The West Coast Relays is the same site as the 2009, 2010 and 2011 State Track & Field Championship.

With my first ever 50 mile trail race looming, I wanted to do a really long training run so I thought why not do it with friends! So I came up with the Mr. Toads 12 Hour Challenge in the tradition of my New Year's Day Killa Hilla Classic. At the Leona Divide 50 Miler, I have to finish in under 13 hours so I wanted to simulate race conditions as best I could.

Originally I planned to do laps of the MR. Toads 20k but realized I did not want to run such a long loop (lonely and van / aid station 12.4 miles away) so on Thursday I decided to come up with a shorter loop. The loop I made ended up being a tad over three miles and was mostly on trails instead of the fire roads above Hart Park.
Before the start.

  • Mile 1 - 14:52 up 251 down 26
  • Mile 2 - 14:01 up 190 down 0
  • Mile 3 - 12:01 up 0 down 344
The first lap, we all went up the Pistol Range Hill and it was nice to have some company. The weather was great and the fields were green. Stephen took off with a group in tow and I settled down for a long day.
Michael & Sarah on the Pistol Ridge.
  • Mile 4 - 16:32  up 225 down 59
  • Mile 5 - 16:09  up 184 down 0
  • Mile 6 - 13:21 up 0 down 322
Michael with two Sarahs chasing him!
As you can tell, I slowed down a bit on the second lap which I did going up Pistol. as the day went on, people came and went.
    • Mile 7 - 16:34 up 198 down 93
    • Mile 8 - 15:28 up 197 down 0
    • Mile 9 - 15:02 up 22 down 310
    Stephen heading to Toads.
After I completed my second lap, Stephen finished his third lap and was done for the day. On my third lap I was joined by a runner who lapped me and he went on and walked three more laps with me before he called it a day.
    My mystery pacer.

      • Mile 10 - 16:32 up 249 down 110
      • Mile 11 - 12:25 up 168 down 78
      • Mile 12 - 11:42 up 16 down 244
      Chris Felix was the Rebl

        • Mile 13 - 15:45 up 277 down 141
        • Mile 14 - 16:00 up 173 down 83
        • Mile 15 - 14:18 up 0 down 210
Chris Felix and his running buddy Aaron did five laps and were rebels by going up Toads instead of down, I did not specify the direction one had to do the loop and had considered making it one way only or switching every lap but in the end, I did not make a pre-race ruling. After I saw them do a loop that way, I tried it and found it to be a lot easier and faster.

So far the rest of the race I did it by going up Toads. I believe I did four or five laps going down Toads. The reason I think the up Toads way is easier and faster is that you get the climbing over in one mile. It is a 300 foot climb up Toads and then basically downhill back to Hart Park.
        Heading up Toads.
Doing the loop down Toads is harder because you seem to climb for two miles and then run down Toads which is hard to do when you are tired and the the trail is dry and slippery.
          • Mile 16 - 17:28 up 229 down 126
          • Mile 17 - 16:24 up 189 down 81
          • Mile 18 - 16:16 up 0 down 196
Later in the morning the Bumgarners joined me and put in quite a few laps. Ryan (dad) did 7 laps in preparation for an Ironman and Mindy (mom) did 6 laps to take the woman's title.
          The Bumgarners!
            • Mile 19 - 1659 up 211 down 162
            • Mile 20 - 1607 up 226 down 28
            • Mile 21 - 17:14 up 0 down 239
As the day went on, I started questioning why I made it a 12 hour challenge. It got warm and the hills started taking their toll and I had only done half the time. I started thinking another 8 hour challenge would have been better or maybe a 10 hour one. But then I got another wind and knew I could get ten laps in.
            Mid day
              • Mile 22 - 19:14 up 174 down 191
              • Mile 23 - 20:24 up 212 down 0
              • Mile 24 - 18:04 up 77 down 181

              • Mile 26 - 16:41 up 251 down 17
              • Mile 27 - 12:16 up 7 down 177
              • Mile 28 -  14:15 up 108 down 219

              • Mile 30 - 1808 up 2 down 167
After I got ten laps in, I took some time at my van and changed my shirt and decided to get in twelve laps.
                • Mile 31 - 2237 up 107 down 219
                • Mile 32 - 2202 up 324 down 16
                • Mile 33 - 1701 up 25 down 213
                • Mile 34 - 1837 up 102 down 223
                • Mile 35 - 2333 up 308 down 0
                • Mile 36 - 2001 up 0 down 194
On the 12th lap, I picked up my trail ribbons and enjoyed the evening and looked forward to a nice meal but when I got to the van I realized I felt good and had time for another lap.
                  • Mile 37 - 1841 up 62 down 223
                  • Mile 38 - 2217 up 341 down 0
                  • Mile 39 - 1751 up 15 down 202
                  • Mile 40 - 1504 up 44 down 269
My 13th lap was a victory lap and I felt great, I had my ipod on and was listening to Above and Beyond's Trance Around The World podcast. The music, the wind and the setting sun made my last lap a memorable one.
40 miles in 11 hours and 16 minutes.
Next year I may make a longer and harder loop.

                      Race Preview:

If you liked my Killa Hilla Classic, here is another event just like it! The rules are simple:

The race begins at 7am and ends at 7pm. The winner is the person who does the most laps of the Mr. Toad's 3 mile course. Only complete laps count btw.

There is no entry fee, t-shirt or awards. No official aid stations either. So this is a BYOB & BYOF event.

Of course, if someone wanted to bring food and drink to share that would be great.

Like the Killa Hilla Classic, you can come out and do as many laps as you want as long as they are between 7am and 7pm.

So come out and do at least one!

This was the first year that I was actually going to run this race. In the past, I have run around and shot the race but since I am training for a trail 50 miler, I figure i should race as many trail runs as I can. There is nothing better that a race to test how your training is going. So less than a week after running the soggy LA marathon, I was at another race ready to run hard.

                      too be continued...

Malibu Creek Trail Run - 03.06.11

                        Malibu Creek
                        Sunday, 06 March 2011
                        10km, 25km & 50km
A few days before the event, I checked the Entrant's List HERE and saw that Bakersfield's own Anna Frank had signed up for the 25k and I knew all the other ladies would be running for second and that the boys better watch out! Anna has been beating mot of the men in Kern County lately and has almost won a few races out right like the McFarland Christmas run and many others.

A few weeks ago, she ran sub 1:20 at the BTC Half marathon so we knew she was fit but this was a trail race. Well I guess a few hills, rocks and creek crossing did not slow her down much. She ended up running sub 7:30 mile pace over the 25k race! Plus she won the race overall with a time of 1:55:12.

From what I can tell, she tied the course record and took almost 20 minutes off the woman's record.

Above our the official times but I think some of the 25k times are off because I know mind is. According to my Garmin, I ran 3:26:09 with a moving time of 3:16:02 but hey I will take their time! My Garmin said the course was 15.1 miles long and the elevation gain was 2,815 feet and I burned 2,547 calories.

The elevation gain was 2815 feet and the loss was 2,828 feet. The minimum elevation was 445 feet and the maximum elevation was 2,430 feet. My average pace was 13:39 with an average moving pace of 12:58 and my best pace was 6:25. Looks like I lost ten minutes waiting to cross the creek!

The day began with a group meeting at Bagels at 5am to carpool to the race. The drive to this race was a short one but then we got to the park and it was not open. It was a little after 7am but the ranger had not shown up to open the park. So we sat in a long line of cars and paid our $12 park entry fee and waited.
                          The mandatory pit stop.

At about the time some of our kidneys were going to burst, we finally got into the park and then had two new lines to join. The bathroom line and the number pick up line. While waiting in the number line, I talked to Anna and Siobhan about the race and found out it was their first trail run besides our local races. We talked about the course and the aid station situation and I think they revised their pace expectations. In the end, the course did not seem to slow them down very much.

                          Anna
Despite all the drama, the race still started on time and we headed downhill on a nice paved road that lead to a dirt road. For the first mile, Cindy ran along with Lyndi, Peter and I but once we hit the dirt she took off. Soon after, we hit some switchbacks and started climbing for awhile. Then we went downhill to a lovely meadow.
                          Heading to the Hill!
At the end of the meadow, the race came to a standstill due to the water crossing. The creek was maybe 20 feet across and about 2 foot deep at most. It was moving fairly fast and the rocks were a bit slippery so having the rope to hang on to was good. Some took their shoes off to cross the creek which slowed down the crossing even more. If the trail was not so tight, I would of tried to cross somewhere else and go around the log jam.
                          • Mile 1 - 11:40 - up 121 and down 72
                          • Mile 2 - 11:46 - up 103 and down 285
But I waited, took some photos and rested up for all the climbing we were about to do. After crossing the creek, there was an aid station and then we started going up and up on some fire roads. Lyndi, Peter and I pushed each other up those hills and along the way we caught quite a few runners before we got to the mile 8 aid station.
                          The line.
                          Fun!

                          • Mile 4 - 17:54 - up 573 and down 0
                          • Mile 5 - 17:08 - up 509 and down 0
                          Lyndie
                          • Mile 6 - 13:27 - up 322 and down 116
                          • Mile 7 - 13:03 - up 203 and down 192
                          • Mile 8 - 15:20 - up 149 and down 135
                          An Interesting Peak.
Probably the coolest part of the run besides the creek crossing was the interesting rock ridge in the above photo. We went up and over it and then hit the second aid station. I never stay long at these and just grbbed a coke and some gold fish and then took off to do the last major climb.

As I was approaching the aid station, I saw Denni taking but knew that would be the last time I would see her. On the last climb, I caught a couple Bakersfield runners (Nikki and Isaak) who were doing the 50k and we chatted a bit before they left me on the downhill section.
                          Nikki & Isaak
                          • Mile 9 - 15:34 - up 307 and down 156
                          • Mile 10 - 10:25 - up 0 and down 700
                          • Mile 11 - 10:59 - up 73 and down 478
                          • Mile 12 - 11:53 - up 0 and down 444
As you can see, we did some serious downhill running. In three miles we dropped over 1600 feet down those rutted fire roads. About halfway down I caught up to a 6'6 ultra marathoner who had just finished his first hundred miler a month ago. I decided to stay with him because he was almost going my pace, plus he had some great stories that made those last miles go by a little quicker.
                          My Ultra Buddy
Finally we made it down to the M.A.S.H area started seeing quite a few tourists. This spot was 2.5 miles from the parking lot so these people had hiked quite a bit.I figured that the rest of the route would be flat but it was rolling the rest of the way. While went went by the creek, a couple ladies caught up to us and I decided to run in with them.

Can you hear the theme music?

                          We ran in together.
                          • Mile 13 - 14:45 - up 0 and down 34
                          • Mile 14 - 11:00 - up 39 and down 164
                          • Mile 15 - 12:21 - up 39 and down 31
                          • To Finish - 7:27 - up 39 and down 0
As you can see, I ran the last part pretty fast. The girl above had her boyfriend join her with a less than half a mile to go and I thought she had beat me but then I thought what they heck and I caught her.

                          Her pacer.

In the end, I covered the 15.1 miles in a time of 3:26:09. My pace was 13:39 but my moving pace was 12:58 over the 25k course. Though I enjoyed the race and ran well, I doubt I will return to Malibu Creek. I like trail runs with more single track and more up and down. Going up a fire road for miles and down a fire road for miles is just not that interesting.
