Race #1 - Girl's High School D2L VARSITY : 7:30

Ridgeview ran in this early race and senior Tijerra Lynch (19:07) ran the best time of the day for a Kern athlete and lead her team to an 18th place finish. The Wolf Pack's team time was 1:44:58 (20:59 average).

Junior Cameron Miller and freshman Blake Haney both went under 16 for the first time. Blake has now moved to number 16 on ESPN's All-Time freshman list. He is now the fastest central section freshman of all-time as well.

Kern County squads expected to compete: Bakersfield, McFarland, Ridgeview, Stockdale and Wasco.

Welcome to the 32nd running of the ASICS Clovis Invitational! It is our desire to provide you and your athletes a high quality invitational with some of the best competition that California has to offer. Our invitational is run on the California state meet course at Woodward Park in Fresno. Many teams with state meet aspirations come to the ASICS Clovis Invitational to allow their runners to experience the course before the State Championships in November. Because of this, the meet provides some great mid-season competition!

We will again have a Championship race for our elite teams. Due to the number of schools that wanted to run in our Championship race last year, final determination on what teams will compete in this division will be determined after the entry deadline. We will again have 4 varsity divisions based on your school’s 2009 CBEDS. Out-of-state schools will be based on 9-12 co-ed enrollment. In an attempt to balance the varsity races, divisions will be established after the entry deadline. We will again provide freshman/sophomore and junior varsity races for your lower level runners. Freshmen and sophomores may run in either the freshmen/sophomore or JV races. These races, for the first time, will be run in the middle of the meet rather than the beginning or end. Also, we will only have one freshman/sophomore girls race and one set of JV races so plan on them being large. A special note- October 9th is one of the SAT dates for 2010-2011.

The BC Invite will be held on Friday, October 1st at the Soccer Complex near Lake Ming. There is only a boys & girls race so the field is quite large. The girl's race is expected to start at 11am with the boy's race to follow. Later in the day Bakersfield College will also compete with other colleges.

Stockdale's Cameron Miller (photo) wins the varsity race in a time of 16:24, His team came in second to Madera South. Stockdale's JV boys won their race and the frosh/soph boys came in 6th,

In the girl's race Carolin Haney ran 21:44 on the Woodward 5k course and lead her Mustangs to a fourth place finish. The Lady Mustangs came in second in the frosh/soph girls race> The Mustangs took first and second in this race.

Liberty also ran at this meet and were lead by Shawn Hicks (18:12) and came in 7th out of 21 teams. Liberty's girls squad came in 9th and were lead by Jordan Thoennes who ran 23:40.

J.F.K. Distance Challenge - Bakersfield High to Tehachapi High

This is the first year for this event that was inspired by the 1963 50-Mile Hike Phenomenon and the Comrades marathon. For years now, I have wanted to do a 50 miler but have not mainly because I knew I could not make the time limits at most of the races. Most have a 13 hour time limit and the courses are hard. So the chance of a 6 hour marathon wogger of finishing were slim to none.

So on Sunday (09.26.10) I will be leaving Bakersfield High for my 50 plus mile journey to Tehachapi High. According to Google Maps, the distance will be 51.4 miles. In accordance with the JFK challenge, I hope to be finish in under 20 hours. Along the way, I plan to tweet on my progress and if you would like to join me for a few miles, please do.

A Look Back at the New Frontier of Fitness
In 1963, during the end of the Kennedy administration, a strange fad quickly grabbed the nation's attention. Based partly on a genuine concern for the public's fitness and partly on a dare, the nation briefly took to the streets in record numbers. Most walked like they never had before and would never do again.

In the tradition of the Comrades Marathon this year will be the first Bakersfield Distance Project Challenge. Like the world famous Comrades Marathon, this challenge will run in different directions each year and will be over 50 miles in length.

This year will be the uphill version from Bakersfield High to Tehachapi High.

In the tradition of the JFK 50 Miler there is a 20 hour time limit.

The JFK 50 Mile was first held in the spring of 1963. It was one of numerous such 50 mile events held around the country as part of President John F. Kennedy's push to bring the country back to physical fitness.

When Kennedy was assassinated in November of 1963, most of these events were never held again. The JFK 50 Mile in Washington County, MD is the only original JFK 50 Mile Challenge event to be held every year since

In 1963, the initial inspiration behind the event came from then President John F. Kennedy challenging his military officers to meet the requirements that Teddy Roosevelt had set for his own military officers at the dawn of the 20th Century. That Roosevelt requirement was for all military officers to be able to cover 50 miles on foot in 20 hours to maintain their commissions. When word got out about the "Kennedy Challenge", non-commissioned military personnel also wanted to take the test themselves as did certain robust members of the civilian population.

Sanger Invitational - Shafter continues it's winning ways. So far the Generals have won team titles at every meet they have competed at this season

The race course was held at Avocado Lake in Sanger CA. The 3.03 mile course had all the elements, grass, road, and sand. The weather was a muggy 89 degrees at race time. A single race was run for both Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls for individual awards. Large (Yosemite Div.) and Small (Sequoia/Sierra Div.) schools were separated from the results to determine team awards. -- Larry Gonzales
