Four for Four Again

Bakersfield's Wandick finished the night by helping her squad (Felisa Torres, Shinead McDonald and Keiarra White) make the state in her fourth event of the evening. Their time was a season best and it needed too be because the race behind Edison's super quick 3:50 was a a close one.

The Third Deuce

Wandick has had a great high school career but has often been in the shadow of great high school athletes. In the past, she has had to contend with Dominique Lauderdale (Ridgeview 07 & Washington 11) and Romesha Anderson (Stockdale 07 & southern Miss 11) and this year it is super sophomore Prandini who scored 40 points for her team and lead the to a valley title. The Drillers had three in the top ten and Belt is just a 10th grader.

She Will Have Company

Last year, Brushay Wandick went alone to state with the Driller boys and competed in the 200. This year the CSUB bound senior will have some company because she helped both of her relays squads make the state meet. She will be in four events: the 100, 200, 400 relay and 1600 relay. Of course she has been doing all four all year but at state there are prelims in all of them on Friday and then the finals are on Saturday.

Who Made State? (Girls)

To make state one must come in the top three at valley or meet a very tough At-Large standard. The following girls made state:

Brushay Wandick (Bakersfield 12) made state in the 100, 200 and both relays. Frontier's Taylor Jackson (11) was the only other female track athlete to make state. Though the favorite in both hurdles, she only made it in the 300. In the field events Kern County had more success: Amanda Klinchuch (Liberty 12) made it the pole vault, Shanesha Epps (Golden Valley) in the long jump. Anna Jelmini (Shafter) and Alex Collatz (Stockdale) made it in throws and Lacie Rasley (Shafter) made it in the shot as well.

Hoping to Have Company

The Drillers are in the fast heat and in lane four. So they are favored to make the top 3 and move on to state. Last year Brushay was the lone Lady Driller to make state and she hopes to have company this year.

Four for Four with the Four by Four

With the Drillers win in the 1600 relay, Wandick (12) won four events at the South Area meet. In the 100, 200 and the relays Wandick and her teammates have good chance of placing in the top three at valley and qualifying for state in all four events.

1,600 relay--1. Bakersfield (Torres, McDonald, Wandick, White), 4:01.68; 2. Liberty (Lee, J. Fitch, Wilcox, M. Fitch), 4:02.66; 3. Golden Valley (Shaw, Epps, Hildalgo, Garcia), 4:10.54; 4. Frontier (Delarosa, Dial, Ka. Ellis, Jackson), 4:11.74.

Deja Two Hundred That Is

The 200 finish was very much like the 100 except Brown and Belt switched places. Wandick (sr) and Brown (sr) are both ranked in the top ten in the valley. Last year, Wandick ran the 200 at state. Interestingly, Watson got second overall despite being seeded in the slow heat.

200--1. Wandick, Bak, 25.39; 2. Watson, Stock, 25.99; 3. Brown, Bak, 26.04; 4. Belt, Bak, 26.09

Two Down, Two to Go

After anchoring her team to victory in the 400 relay, Wandick (sr) took the 100 too. She is ranked number two in the valley and will be accompanied by her two teammates at valley in the 100. Lei Belt's 12.49 vaults her into the top five with Watson in the valley. The Drillers are so deep that Belt is not even on the team's 400 relay.

100--1. Wandick, Bak, 12;31; 2. Watson, Stock, 12.47; 3. Belt, Bak, 12.49; 4. Brown, Bak, 12.72.

Almost Wilcox 57

Erica Wilcox (jr) has owned the 400 locally and has been mainly racing the clock but next week at valley she will have her work cut out for her to make the top three and move on to the state meet.

400--1. Wilcox, Lib, 58.07; 2. Chudy, Cent, 1:00.78; 3.White, Bak, 1:00.82; 4. Torres, Bak, 1:01.50.

There at least three girls under 58 in the valley and I am sure Wilcox will be joining them shortly.

Bakersfield came in 3rd and 4th but may not run the open 400 at valley and focus on making it to state in the 4 x 400 relay. Interestingly, the Driller's fastest 400 runner has never run an open 400 but is no stranger to Wilcox. Brushay Wandick (sr) owns the 200 but a heads up in the open 400 would be interesting.

At most meets, Wilcox and Wandick run the same leg of the 4 x 400, with Wilcox usually chasing Wandick. With Brushay off to CSUB in the fall, this much hoped for match up in the open 400 may never happen but I have heard that Wilcox is interested in competing for CSUB in the future. So maybe that match up will happen after all.
