Summer Series 5 was the hottest yet but many ran faster then they had before. There were a lot of athletes in before 7:30 pm and the new two chute system worked.

The new two chute system and Stephen Humphreys trail maintenance alleviated the crush and they finish line back up too.
Taking the points lead after the 5th race was Blanca Anderson who placed 15 in this race and now has a total of 59 points. In 2006, Her oldest son won and her middle son took second in the points race.
There are a couple people who could catch her. 4th place John Banales has a two race score of 53 and 5th place Greg Tesch has a two race total of 38. Others with low two race scores are:
- Carla Tafoya 29
- Yvonne Lopez 32
- Mike Henderson 42
- Jeri Shea 34
- Joseph Sanchez 50
- Christian Saenz 55
So it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Race Preview:
BTC Summer Series #5 will be held on Tuesday August 3rd and it should have another large crowd. Summer vacations are coming to an end and many local high schools have started training together for the upcoming cross country season.
Because of the unprecedented crowds, there has been problems with the finish line backing up and people not getting to run to the finish line and get an accurate time.
Besides the timing and place issues, there has been problems with pushing, shoving and cutting in the line. These matters have been taking seriouly by the track club and they how to implement a two chute system at this race and hopefully not have the problems they have had in the past.
Also helping matters is the
Bakersfield Distance Project's lead Sherpa Stephen Humphreys who has gone out to the course numerous times in the past week and done trail maintenance! so the trail should be wider and have a lot less rocks and weeds.
All of these new measures will be needed because I predict many schools will be out in full force at this race and the 6th one as well. This week on the bike path, I saw runners from
CSUB,
Garces,
BHS, Stockdale and Centennial.
Speaking of local high school cross country, Foothill will be hosting a 5k on their campus on Saturday August 28th. This event is the
Joel Mena Memorial Scholarship Run and it will start at 8am.
Then on Saturday Sept. 25th Ridgeview will be hosting their
5th Annual Wolf Pack Invite at River Walk and their will be an open 5k race at 7:30am. So you can test yourself on the same course that the high school athletes will run on later in the day. One should really stick around and watch Kern County's top teams compete at this invite.
But I digress. In Summer Series action, the
overall title standings are starting to take shape. The leader after five races is Veasna Sok who has 139 points and is followed by first time Summer Series participant Blanca Anderson who has 145. Right now tenth place is held by Joesph Sanchez with 273 points (Prizes are awarded to the top ten and last year the winners got nice BTC duffel bags.)
Rounding out the the top 20 are several current and past
Bakersfield Distance Projecters. Leading the group is Blanca in second, Rod Nance in 7th (224 pts), Nicholas Anderson in 13th (292 pts), and David Plyler in 20th (322 pts). David recently PRed in the
San Francisco Marathon in a time of 3:26:43.
Also in the top 20 are a number of friends (They train with the BDP from time to time.) of the
Bakersfield Distance Project. In 6th was Mike Holmes (213 pts), Barbara Maddox is 8th (256 pts) and Norma Diaz is 17th place (306 pts).
Lastly in the
Best Scratch Times competition, there appears to be a few errors at the top of both lists. In the men's division, they have an 8 year old leading the way with a 16:05 which can not be right. Cesar Mireles (A former Golden Valley harrier who now runs for
Rocky Mountain College.) appears to have the fastest time of the summer with a 16:25 and the top high school athlete is Stockdale junior Cameron Miller (16:50).
In the
women's competition, I believe the top two times are wrong and am certain that the 2nd best time is wrong because I know her. so the women's leader is CSUB's Ariana Celis with a 19:16 which is one second better then her Roadrunner team mate Casey Glassey.
Behind them is
Bakersfield Distance Projecter Shawna Roundtree with a time of 20:46. Shawna ran for BC a couple years ago and is training for a fall marathon where she hopes to beat her PR. Following her are a number of CSUB runners: Lina Nunez (21:10), Pam Boyles (Former CSUBer and coaches wife with a time of 21:15), Monica Guzman (21:18), Ashley Nolasco (21:49) and Judith Mata (21:53).
In the high school competition, I am not sure who the fastest is. In 13th is Esthefani Perez with a time of 21:56 and I think she runs for North. I do know that Carli Preston (22:23) in 18th place will be a sophomore at Shafter this fall.
In front of her is 13 year old Andie Condie who is visiting family her in Bakersfield before returning to the Middle East where her father works. Last summer her family visit Bakersfield and ran a number of our local races. Tragically, her brother was the
runner who got hit by the car at the
Howlin at the Moon race last year. I am pleased to report that Tyler recently graduated from high school and hiked
Mount Kilimanjaro.
