8. Start conservative and when you feel good, don’t pick up the pace… the next time you feel good, don’t pick up the pace… the next time you feel good, don’t pick up the pace, the next time you feel good… you get the picture. Once you’ve completed 3/4 of your race, you can let ‘er rip.

The Voices of Hardrock: Part 2 – Is It a Race?
The Hardrock Endurance Run annually draws some of the world’s top ultrarunners… with many more wishing that they, too, were in the event. Still, many of those same elites don’t consider Hardrock a race. That’s the Hardrock tradition – the event is in name and in practice a run rather than a race. Watch the below video to find out where the tradition comes from and what it means to Hardrock’s participants.

Waterlogged – A Dogma-Shattering Book?
A new book by renowned sport medicine expert, Tim Noakes, MD, aims to change our beliefs – many of them longstanding, many of them inaccurate – on what it means to fuel optimally in endurance sports:
Waterlogged – A Dogma-Shattering Book?
- Drink only to thirst, not on a schedule.
- Drinking does not prevent heat illness.
- Ingesting salt is unnecessary in ultras.
- Urine frequency or color has nothing to do with hydration or kidney function.

The Girl Crush Chronicles: Ultrarunner Catra Corbett « Fit and Feminist
I first read about Catra in “Born to Run,” where she garnered a couple of sentences as the “kaleidoscopically tattooed” woman who ran the 212-mile John Muir Trail, from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. And because that isn’t awesomely bonkers enough, she got to the end of the trail, then turned around and ran back. As a result, she holds the “yo yo” speed record for women on that trail, completing the whole 424-mile run in 12 days, 4 hours and 57 minutes.

AC TOP CONTENDERS
MEN:
Jorge Pachecho (of course). Justin Angel has multiple AC finishes in 20 hours. Raphael Arceo, saw him training near Telegraph Peak awhile back - looked and sounded focused this year. Word on the street is that Dylan Bowman isn't racing AC after states now, but is going to toe the line with a thickening field of fast cats at Speedgoat in Utah. Brett Rivers won't make it either. Bummer.

I hope to be somewhere in the mix, but with my limited experience with this distance, if I were a betting man I’d place my $ on Jorge and Justin.
WOMEN:
This race is going to be much more exciting. Keira Henninger is my top pick. She's run the course, she's in great running shape right now and she's uber fierce. Angela Shartel will definitely be a contender up front as well, as long as she hasn't been disqualified for arguing so much with RD Uncle Hal during the trail work day, we'll see. Sada Crawford, from the looks of things, has been training like nuts and is super talented. I don't think she has raced a 100 yet, but has the potential for setting a new CR if a hundo isn't that big of a deal for her. Paulette Zillmer, yeah, she's really good, won AC last year. While Wendy Barth isn't thought of as being as speedy as the women mentioned above, she's a smart & steady long distance runner and I see her on the podium because I know she'll finish.

All-Area boys track and field selections - BakersfieldCalifornian.com
Blake Haney, soph, Stockdale
The nation's top sophomore in the mile (4:09.43) and 3,200 meters (8:54.65) predictably dominated the area distance races, going undefeated locally in the 1,600 and 3,200, winning the latter race at the section meet and then took third in state in the 1,600.
Ivan Gonzalez, jr, Ridgeview
A soccer player who might have found a new sport, Gonzalez out-kicked Buchanan's Cody Brazeal to win the section's 800 crown in 1:54.26. He lowered that PR to 1:53.31 to finish 13th in state.
Cameron Miller, sr, Stockdale
Besides pushing teammate Haney in practice, the Stanford-bound Miller was great in his own right. He qualified for the state meet finals in both distance events after placing third in the 1,600 (4:13.10) and second in the 3,200 (9:12.30) in the section.

All-Area boys track and field: Haney tracking on 'historic' pace - BakersfieldCalifornian.com
Haney only made it look that way. A year after setting a freshman state record in winning the Central Section title in the 1,600 meters, he won a section title in the 3,200 and finished third in the state in the 1,600.
His best times in the mile (4:09.43 at the prestigious adidas Grand Prix Dream Mile), 1,600 (4:09.29) and 3,200 (8:54.65) were the best by a sophomore in the nation.

Cross du Mont Blanc Finish Line – FRESHABITS
I wasn’t going to give you a recap on the Cross du Mont Blanc race. It was that bad. I didn’t want you looking up my race results and thinking, “Really? And this girl thinks she’s an expert on food and fitness.” But then, after relaying the full synopsis to my brother, I realized that the races you struggle through are the ones whose stories are the most inspiring. And since I told you about my hill training for this 23 km mountainous run in the French Alps, I thought it was only fair to share the end results with you.

Sit Out Period - Frequently Asked Questions
Question: My son transferred and was granted the Sit Out Period in the sports of football, wrestling and track and field. What date will be he eligible to compete?
Sit Out Period - Frequently Asked Questions
Answer:
For the 2012-13 school year, the student would actually have three eligibility dates as they would have a Sit Out Period for each of the three sports.
Football: October 1
Wrestling: December 31
Spring: April 1
[CIF State Bylaw 207.B.5.b(viii)]
Note: If the student transfers after their new school’s first contest, then their actual start date would be determined by the local CIF-Section Office.
Question: My daughter transferred and was granted the Sit Out Period. May she practice with the varsity team during this time period?
Answer:
Yes. The student may participate in practices with the varsity team during the Sit Out Period.
Question: My daughter transferred and was granted the Sit Out Period for the sports of volleyball and softball. May she play on a sub-varsity team during this time?
Answer:
No. If the student wishes to compete at the varsity level in either volleyball or softball, she may not compete at the sub-varsity level in those two sports. If she does compete at the sub-varsity level during the Sit Out Period in either of those two sports, she will be ineligible for varsity competition in that sport (including playoffs) for the remainder of that school year. [CIF State Bylaw 207.B.5.b(vii)]
Question: My son/daughter has transferred schools for a second time. May they use the Sit out Period?
Answer:
No. The Sit Out Period may only be used by a student who is transferring for the first time since their initial enrollment in the 9th grade in any school [CIF State Bylaw 207.B.5.b(i)]
