Amazingly, this was my first Rock to Pier. Some how I have missed it over the years but I doubt I will in the future. Bakersfield and Kern County had a lot of runner at this event and many placed well. No wonder they call this part of the coast Bakersfield West.

Pam Boyles was the top Bakersfield female with a 4th place finish and Eddy Lee was the top Bakersfield male with a 2nd place finish. In the age group competition, Kern County had the following top 3 results:

  • Female 11 to 14 - Jennifer Ramirez of McFarland (2nd)
  • Female 15 to 18 - Megan Thompson of Fellows (Taft) (3rd)
  • Female 19 to 24 - Erica Silva of Bakersfield (1st)
  • Female 30 to 34 - Raeanne DeBoer of Bakersfield (1st)
  • Female 45 to 49 - Pam Boyles of Bakersfield (2nd)

Overall Female Winners:

Rosemarie Lagunas (46) won the race in a time of 39:49 and was 25th overall. Behind her was Lindsey Grey who will be a junior at Clovis High this fall. She ran 42:07. In 4th overall was Pam Boyles in 43:03.

Justin Coburn (26) from Clovis won the race in a time of 33:54. Csub's Eddy Lee (23) came in second (34:09) and David Bacus (25) took 3rd (34:15). They were followed by two McFarland runners: Galvin Gonzales (32) who came in 5th (34:39 and Jose Monrreal (15) who came in 9th in a time of 36:08. In 8th was Centennial's Craig Varner who also ran 36:08.

McFarland's Jennifer Ramirez ran 51:56 for second and lead over a half a dozen of her fellow school mates in this division. 4th in this age group was Cambria Tudor who will be a sophomore at Shafter this fall.

Megan Thompson (Taft 10'), who will be running at CSUB this fall, came in third in a time of 45:05. In 5th overall was Emily Shuford (45:49), who will be a senior at BHS this fall along with her team mate Sarah Scrivano who came in 10th in a time of 48:53, In 6th was North High's Kaylee Moyer in a time of 46:02. She was in front of McFarland's Corina Garcia (46:47) and Amanda Garcia (47:33). There were 47 finishers in this age group.

Bakersfield's Erica Silva (24) won this age group in a time of 44:47. In 12th place was former Driller and current Aggie, Analiese Scrivano.

Lindsay Brown (5th/49:10), Corina Veiss (6th/49:49) and Amy Dinsmore (8th/51:38) of Bakersfield were all in the top ten. There were 62 in this group.
Complete Results for Women: 30-34:

Not sure what happen with the results in this group because they have our BDPer Nicki Gilbert in first but she didn't run 49:57. In 50:16 is Raenne DeBoer of Bakersfield however. Rounding out the top ten from Bakersfield was April Morphis (7th) in a time of 52:41 and Jennifer Denham (10th) in a time of 1:00:02.

Bakersfield Distance Projecter Erin Gayer ran 66:32 for 30th place and her sister (Meagan Gonzalez) ran 67:05 for 33rd place out of 64 and Gabby Alexander ran 82:15.

Complete Results for Women: 35-39:

Bakersfield took 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10th in this age group. Johanna Sherley ran 53:51 for 5th and was followed by Del Gloss (54:15), Jennifer Eggers (54:26), Tammy Zeimat (54:29) and Paula Marroquin (56:04). Ther were 79 in this age group. BDP's Lisa Sorensen walked the 6 mile course in 1:23:16 for 60th place.
  • 20 Tabitha Raber 61:16 - Sara Stidham's mom
  • 57 Cherie Delorenzo 82:16 - Building Better Bodies Boot Camper
Complete Results for Women: 40-44:

Kelly Lopez of Taft was the first Kern finisher in a time of 49:59 for 4th place and she was folowed by Bakersfield's Haley Tobin who ran 50:11. Rounding out the top ten was Christy Haycock who recently put on the Memorial 5k with her Eagle Scout son. She ran 52:45.

BDPer Tricia Berman ran 64:37 for 31st place out of 76. She was followed by a couple Building Better Bodies Boot Campers: Sheree Skelly (1:22:24) and Trish Reed (1:24:48).
Complete Results for Women: 45-49:

Pam Boyles took second out of 58 with a time of 43:03. Joining her in the top ten was Luann Shults of Bakersfield (5th) in a time of 53:42. Building Better Bodies: Boot Camp Fitness Training member Barbara Maddox ran 1:22:19 and the Weasel aka Blanca Anderson ran 1:39:44 in her first 6 miler ever.

Norma Diaz was the top Bakersfield finisher in a a time of 56:08 for 6th place. Christine Blalock (8th) ran 61:09 and Joyce Ayers (9th) ran 61:14.

Bakersfield Distance Projecters Diana Dean Daves (15th) ran 66:15 and Kim Nance (23rd) ran 70:38. There were 60 in this age group.

Complete Results for Women: 55-59:

Lupe Eberly of Bakersfield won this age group again in a time of 49:45 and Debbie Torbert (4th) ran 57:14.

Esther Ray of Taft came in 2nd in a time of 56:38. Bakersfield's Marilyn Johnson (9th) ran 66:31 and Marvis Friesen (10th) ran 69:26

Bakersfield's Sarah Daley took 5th in a time of 1:27:37.

Men: 1- 1 2-10:

Ben Wells was the first Bakersfield finisher in a time 63:07 for 2nd place followed by Ethan Green (6th) in 1:25:58 and Peter Villalon (9th) in a time of 1:31:05. Taft's Brett Walls came in 4th in a time of 1:14:27.

Men: 11-14:

Our top Bakersfield Distance Project finisher was Josh Gilbert who just missed out on a first place finish by 3 seconds. He ran 45:35 and will be a freshman at Mira Monte this fall. His mom ( Nicki Gilbert ), grandmother ( Kim Nance ) and grandfather also ran the race.

Men: 15-18:

Centennial High School Cross Country's Craig Varner was the top finisher in this age group from Bakersfield. He came in 3rd with a time of 36:08 which was 8th overall. His teammate Eric Millan came in 6th in a time of 37:19 (13th overall). Rounding out the top ten were McFarland's Jose Monrreal (4th) who ran 26:08 and Marco Camargo (7th) in a time of 37:53. In 11th, was Driller Kevin Scrivano who ran 41:22. His two sisters and mother ran the event as well.

Men: 19-24:

CSUB's Edward Lee won this age group and came in second overall in the race with a time of 34:09. McFarland's Jesus Gomez came in 3rd in a time of 37:14 and just beat former Driller John Purcell who ran 37:18. Former Blade Vincente Herrera ran 37:24 for 5th.

Men: 25-29:

Bakersfield's David Bacus took second in this age group and third overall in a time of 34:15. Matt Boyles of Bakersfield came in 7th in a time of 47:06.

Men: 30-34:

McFarland's Galvin Gonzales won this age group and was 5th overall in a time of 34:39. In second was Eulogio Rodriguez of Lamont in a time of 39:17. Bakersfield's Gary Massie (7th) ran 44:45 and Bakersfield Distance Projecter Rey Rodriguez aka Rodriguez Rey ran 46:41 for 8th place.

Men: 35-39:

There were four runners from Bakersfield in the top ten: John Gregory came in second in a time of 42:51, Jose Perez (5th) in 47:13, Dave Meek (6th) in 48:22 and Chris Felix (7th) 49:24. Bakersfield Distance Projecter Jason Virrey came in 11th in a time of 52:47.

Men: 40-44:

Bakersfield had four in the top ten in this age group. They were lead by division winner Jonathan Wykoff who ran 41:44. He was followed by Bruce Wearda (5th) in 45:57, Steve Dirske (8th) who pushed a stroller the whole way and ran 49:43 and Brad Ziemat (10th) in a time of 51:20. In 4th was McFarland cross country coach Amador Ayon who ran 43:50 and had by far the largest group of runners at the event.
  • 14 David Eggers 58:06

Men: 45-49:

Mike Gloss was the top Bakersfield finisher in a time of 43:23 for 4th place.

Men: 50-54:

This is a tough division and Bakersfield had four in the top ten. Bakersfield was lead by Carl Hatley who took second in a time of 40:41, Bruce Deeter (4th) ran 42:12, Chris Posey (6th) in 43:02 and Cregg Weinmann (7th) in a time of 43:28. There were 56 finishers in this age group.
  • 15 Randy Jones 51:39 Former Centennial cross country coach who retired after his boys and girls teams won valley titles.
  • 23 Peter Wonderly 55:00 The Voice of Kern County Running
Men: 55-59:

Tim Anderson lists his home as Oakland, but I see him on the bike path all the time, soI am claiming him as a Bakersfield runner. He won this age group with a time of 39:44 which was 23rd. other top ten Bakersfield finishers were Rich Darke (6th) in 48:07 and former Bagel & Blenderz owner Rick Hixson (9th) in a time of 51:22.

Men: 60-64:

Only one Bakersfield runner cracked the top ten in this age group. Greg Johnson ran 48:55 for 4th place and Wasco's Darrell Voth came in 9th in a time of 57:01.
Men: 65-69:

Former Driller coach and teacher Jim Cowles took 3rd in this age group with a time of 55:08.

Men: 70-79 80-99:


In the 70 to 79, Bakersfield had two runners in the top ten. Doug Pruett took 7th in a time of 68:41 and George Medina (10th) ran 1:26:26.

Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Fun Run

2010 marks the 41st running of the Rock to Pier Fun Run. The run/walk is approx. 6 miles in length and takes place on the hard packed sand from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier.

Every year hundreds of Kern County athletes compete in this event and place well in it. Last year, CSUB's Lina Nunez (8th) and Ryan Lucker (4th) were the top Bakersfield finishers. Taft's 2008 Steeplechase Olympian Billy Nelson broke the thirty year old record last year as well.

2010 marks the 41st running of the Rock to Pier Fun Run. The run/walk is approx. 6 miles in length and takes place on the hard packed sand from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier. We welcome people of all ages and fitness levels to participate. Please leave your dogs at home, the beach is home to the Snowy Plover (endangered bird). To learn more about the Snowy Plover, please see handouts.

We will hold the awards ceremony at Morro Rock at 10:00 am. We will have buses running every 15 minutes to shuttle participants back to the Rock.

In 2003, Brian Waterbury, one of the founders of the Rock to Pier Run passed away. In honor of Brian and his contribution to running community, the Morro Bay Recreation and Parks Department renamed the event. To learn more about Brian Waterbury, please see handouts.


The race will begin at 8:30am.

Walk-in Registration
May 10, 2010 Walk-in Registration will be available from Monday, May 10, 2010 to Friday, July 16, 2010 at 7:00 pm. Our regular office hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. On Friday, July 16, 2010 we will be holding registration and packet pick-up from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Walk-in registration will be held at the Morro Bay Community Center, 1001 Kennedy Way, Morro Bay.

Race Day Registration
July 17, 2010 - 07:30 AM Race Day Registration will take place from 7:30 am to 8:15 am at Morro Rock Parking Lot on Saturday, July 17, 2010. Please note that registration fees will increase by $10 on race day.
