Long ago (when I ran for Highland in the 80s) schools and individuals had to qualify to run at the Valley meet in much the same way one must qualify for the state meet now. It was similar to track in that there was an area meet in between the league and valley meets. I am not sure when the area meet was dropped but the state meet started in 1987.
Now every local squad gets to compete at the valley meet and has a shot at qualifying for state. Unlike track, the competition is by divisions. Now in most sections of the state, the divisions are based on school size or CBEDS. So schools compete against schools with a similar sized student body but of course we do not do that in our section any more.
For some reason the powers that be (CIF Central Section) decided to seed divisions not only by school size but also by the school's record. This ruling was and still is an awful decision that puts our section at a disadvantage against other sections in the state.
For example in 2007, the Centennial boys and girls won the division two valley titles. Now their population did not increase but hey they won a valley title and their reward was to moved up to the super tough division one.
The fear is that someday a small school like McFarland (9 time division four state champs) will be moved up as a reward for their success. This will be awful and could adversely affect one of the greatest cross country programs in the nation. Plus it will just help the other schools in the state whose sections only go by enrollment.
Sadly this was brought up for a vote by the CIF Central Section last spring with this result:
The Cross Country Advisory committee recommends that qualifying to the State Meet for cross country should be determined only by enrollment.
Cross country Chair Larry lung spoke on behalf of the coaches and their desire to return to CBEDs as a determining factor for State Cross Country.
At least this year no local squad got moved to my knowledge. The complete list of divisions for boys is HERE and girls is HERE.
Division II Girls - 3:30 p.m.
ReplyDeleteTulare and Mt. Whitney are top-ranked in the division, with MW showing the ability to gap within a minute on some three mile courses. North Bakersfield put together a fine league meet run behind soph Kaylee Moyer and frosh Esthefani Perez. Monica Guzman (Garces) was second here last year under 20 minutes.
Division IV Boys - 11:00 a.m.
ReplyDeleteMcFarland has one of the sport's great traditions, with another fine squad in 2009. Frosh Erik Garcia has moved to the front for McFarland, following up on his age-group headlines as a middle-schooler. McFarland has the top two returnees from the 2008 Section title run in top fivers Marco Perez and Francisco Nava, so the big problem should be where to put another Chapionship trophy at school!
Division IV Girls - 12:00 p.m.
ReplyDeleteMcFarland and Firebaugh should battle here, with McFarland steadily coming on during the Fall, with Firebaugh probably too much 1-5 strength if defending Section titlest Linda Ramos is on the course. Firebaugh returns four from the Division's top 10 finishers in 2008.
Division III Girls - 1:30 p.m.
ReplyDeleteClovis North appears to have a bit too much firepower for the rest of the field, with the trio of Jennifer Nakamura, Sharessa Archie, and Sarah Aghazeynali very solid out front for CN. Ridgeview and Madera South, led by super individual Alisha Brown, are other strong squads at this level.
Division II Boys - 2:00 p.m.
ReplyDeleteImproved Colin Lewis and Jake Van Zandt lead a Highland squad out of Bakersfield that gapped 51 seconds in their League Finals and have firepower through all their scorers. Junior Justin Vilhauer (Redwood, Visalia) won here by 51 seconds last November as a soph with 4:15/9:02 times from the distances in track.
