Jim White Invitational - Central Section's 1st Ever Evening Meet

Meet Recap:

This year's Jim White Invite was held under the lights and did not disappoint. The team action in both varsity races was as good as it gets. The boys had a tie and the girl's race was won by one point.

As in previous years, the course was a multi - looped course around the high school and the nearby park. The football field and baseball ball diamond were the outer boundaries of the course and they were both lite up. At the football stadium there was a large crowd in the home field stands and on the field.

The start was on a a thick grassy field near the stadium where the athletes raced off to the baseball diamond. In the girl's race Ridgeview senior Tijerra Lynch took the early lead and never looked back. If she had, she would have seen some fierce competition for the team title. On the course all the athletes came through the football stadium three times and the last time, they did a lap and a half to the cheers of the crowd.

Lynch entered the stadium alone and finished in an excellent time of 18:43 for the 5k course. After the race, she said that despite an ongoing issue with her right leg, that she loved running at night and wanted to take advantage of the conditions.

Almost a minute behind her was Tulare Union's Celina Vera in a time of 19:42, who ended up leading her team to a one point victory over Madera South. As each girl entered the stadium, you could hear every coach and teammate telling her that every place counts and it certainly did. In the end the score was:

  1. Tulure Union 40
  2. Madera South 41
  3. McFarland 64
  4. Wasco 142
I posted the above, because that was what was reported by the Bakersfield Californian. After receiving an email from reader, I checked the girl's score and found a different result:

Below is the placings without the Highland runner. Since Highland did not have a scoring team, you remove their runners from the scoring of the team title. So everyone behind her moves up a place.

Tulare Union came in 2,5,6,15,16 = 44
Madera South came in 3,4,8,9,17 = 41

2 TU Celina Vera 19:42
3 Madera South Sofia Rios 19:57
4 Madera South Daisy Ramirez 20:00
5 TU Lynzee Gilliland 20:00
6 TU Samina Andrade 20:06
8 Madera South Akaysha Dhaliwal 20:18
9 Madera South Crystal Rivera 20:21
15 TU Collette Pierre 20:56
16 TU Angelica Sanchez 20:56
17 Madera South Lisset Vargas 21:05

After the exciting girl's finish, the boys had their chance to shine and they did. When they entered the stadium for the first time, there was a large pack and they were moving fast. With each successive lap the pack thinned out and by the last entrance to the stadium is was down to two athletes. McFarland sophomore Erik Garcia was leading Wasco senior Cesar Patino by a stride and they kept this distance the whole lap and half around the track. In the end Garcia won by less than one second in a time of 15:47.

It was a good thing he did win because his squad ended up tying Madera South for first. The Cougars went 1-4-5 but Madera South had five runners in the top 12. The final scores were:

  • McFarland 41
  • Madera South 41
  • Highland 85
  • Wasco 95
  • Ridgeview 127
I also reviewed the score of the boy's race and came up with a different result as well. If one uses the results the meet sent out, McFarland won 41 to Maders South's 42.

McFarland - 1,4,5,15,16 = 41
Madera South - 3,8,9,10,12 = 42

Race Summary, courtesy of Amador Ayon

The team battle in varsity boys between Central Section #2 McFarland and
#3 Madera South came down to number 6 runner after a 41 all tie. Madera
South lost due to not having a sixth runner. Electing to run two younger
varsity runners in the F/S race.

In the girls varsity race defending DII Central Champion Tulare Union,
squeaked out a 1 point victory over a much improved Madera South team
43 to 45. The team battle was close between 4 teams until the last mile
when both Central Section DIII Runner-up Ridgeview and DIV 2009
champion McFarland faded. With the McFarland and Ridgeview coming
good performances three days before a the East Bakersfield Invite.

Indiviually, Tierra Lynch of Ridgeview defended her title, covering the 5k
course in 18:44 for an almost one minute victory. Super 10th grader Erik
Garcia won in a new course 15:47.1 to Wasco's Cesar Patino 15:47.9

Kern Boy's Teams are on Top of the Charts

Week #4 (September 28) so mcfarland jump from number 5 to number 2 in the overall rankings complied by Larry Lung. They bumped ridgeview out of the second spot btw.

Another big mover was Stockdale who moved up 4 spots. the Mustangs have been on the road every weekend and have been putting in impressive times with their tightly bunched pack of five.

On Friday, Ridgeview will meet McFarland at the Golden West Invite for their rubber match. Stockdale ironically will stay in town and run the BC Open Invite starting at 11am at the Soccer Complex near Hart Park.

Varsity Boys

Overall score last week

1. Buchanan 63 1
2. McFarland 158 5 Returned the favor to Ridgeview by beating them at their invite.
3. Ridgeview 170 2 Looking forward to the rubber match this Friday against Mcfarland at the
4. Clovis West 183 3
5. Madera South 221 6
6. Stockdale 238 10 Been competing out of town lately but next week they go heads up with Ridgeview
7. Clovis 255 4
8.Highland 297 9 The top SEYL squad looking for a valley title.
9. Roosevelt 352 8
10. Avenal 366 7
11. Madera 406 13
12. Clovis North 479 11
13, Clovis East 513 12
14. Shafter 551 15 - Looked good at Wolf Pack Invite
15. Bullard 578 20
16. Wasco 605 17 - Shafter's main competition in the SSL
17. Redwood 605 16
18. East Bakersfield 620 19 After an early season lost to Highland they have been winning duals and skipping invites.
19. Golden West 629 14
20. Parlier 698 NR

Divisional Rankings compiled by Larry Lung, Central California Cross Country Chair

Division I - Buchanan is the 900 lb gorilla in this division and despite losing some great runners to grauation they are still the top team in the valley and one of the top teams in the state. Clovis West is ranked number two even though Stockdale won their invite last week. CW's top runners went to the Stanford Invite instead of running their own invite. despite getting roughed up by it's league mates, Centennial is ranked number 8.

1. Buchanan 27 1
2. Clovis West 57 2
3. Stockdale 70 4 - The Mustangs won a meet at Woodward & ran well at Woodbridge
8. Centennial 217 9 - Improving each meet but in a Tough league and division

Division II - Highland has had an easy time of it so far in the SEYL and has been racking up quite a few 15s along the way. They even scored a 15 on third ranked East, but since that meet East has been improving and hiding out on the weekends.

1. Highland 71 1 - Where they hope to be in November. Sat out Wolf Pack Invite due to illness & travel conflicts
3. East Bakersfield 134 5 - Improving each week but not running invites so far this season
8. North (Bakersfield) 184 8 - Same problem Centennial has.
9. Liberty (Bakersfield) 217 10 - Have not seen them lately.

Division III - After losing their invite to Mcfarland, the Wolf Pack blitzed the Frontier course on Wednesday. Baker went sub 15 and Garcia was not to far behind. Look for Shafter to make a move up the ranks soon but they have Madera South ahead of them and they are tough.

1. Ridgeview 72 1 - Defeated McFarland once this season and look to do it again. Plus big duel meet next week against Stockdale (both squads are undefeated)
5. Shafter 210 5 Did well at Wolf pack with a huge squad of athletes
6. Wasco 230 6
8. Foothill 343 8 Trojans also have a lot of athletes and as the season progresses some will step up and make an impact on varsity

Division IV - The Cougars have won the valley division four title almost every year and should do the same this year. Their goal is to get that elusive tenth state title and their training has been geared for that goal. But with a lost to Ridgeview at their own invite, they maybe focusing more on these early season battles.

1. McFarland 47 1 - Ranked number 2 overall in the valley and the only school in ages to break 85 minutes at Woodward. Losing to Ridgeview might have been the best thing for them
9. Taft 314 7

The Alpha Males are the Wolf Pack

So far this season, the Ridgeview boys have won every meet they have entered but their latest victory was very special. They went to nine time state champ Mcfarland's Invite and won convincingly. No Kern team has beat Mcfarland at any meet in recent memory and this maybe why they are ranked number two (complete overall rankings at bottom of page) in the valley.

With this lost, Mcfarland dropped to number five. Highland (9) and Stockdale make it four teams in the top ten overall. Of course, in cross country valley and state are competed in division actio and below are the rankings:

Division I - Top three go to state and Stockdale's young talented squad might just make it in November.

1. Buchanan 25 1
2. Clovis West 51 2
3. Clovis 56 3
4. Stockdale 82 4 - Had a real good showing at Woodbridge this past weekend (16:15 avg)
5. Clovis East 114 5
6. Madera 124 6
7. Bullard 170 7
8. Mt. Whitney 187 8
9. Centennial 203 9 - New coach and new direction brings better results. Now if they were in the SEYL instead of the SWYL ...
10. Central 342 10

Division II - The Scotsmen have been bridesmaids two years running at valley.

This week, the Wolf Pack hosts their own meet at River Walk and most of the top teams including McFarland are expected to compete. Besides ranking on Lung's chart, they are also number one on my invite rankings system which rewards points on how well a team performs at invites. My formula is the winning teams point score divided by your score times the number of teams in the meet times 100.

So at the Mcfarland Invite, Ridgeview won with a score of 36 and there were 7 teams:
Ridgeview score - (36/36*7)*100 = 700 points
Mcfarland score - (36/69*7)*100 = 365 points

As of 9.23.09, my rankings are:
