Meet Recap:

This year's Jim White Invite was held under the lights and did not disappoint. The team action in both varsity races was as good as it gets. The boys had a tie and the girl's race was won by one point.

As in previous years, the course was a multi - looped course around the high school and the nearby park. The football field and baseball ball diamond were the outer boundaries of the course and they were both lite up. At the football stadium there was a large crowd in the home field stands and on the field.

The start was on a a thick grassy field near the stadium where the athletes raced off to the baseball diamond. In the girl's race Ridgeview senior Tijerra Lynch took the early lead and never looked back. If she had, she would have seen some fierce competition for the team title. On the course all the athletes came through the football stadium three times and the last time, they did a lap and a half to the cheers of the crowd.

Lynch entered the stadium alone and finished in an excellent time of 18:43 for the 5k course. After the race, she said that despite an ongoing issue with her right leg, that she loved running at night and wanted to take advantage of the conditions.

Almost a minute behind her was Tulare Union's Celina Vera in a time of 19:42, who ended up leading her team to a one point victory over Madera South. As each girl entered the stadium, you could hear every coach and teammate telling her that every place counts and it certainly did. In the end the score was:

1. Tulure Union 40
2. Madera South 41
3. McFarland 64
4. Wasco 142

I posted the above, because that was what was reported by the Bakersfield Californian. After receiving an email from reader, I checked the girl's score and found a different result:

Below is the placings without the Highland runner. Since Highland did not have a scoring team, you remove their runners from the scoring of the team title. So everyone behind her moves up a place.

Tulare Union came in 2,5,6,15,16 = 44
Madera South came in 3,4,8,9,17 = 41

After the exciting girl's finish, the boys had their chance to shine and they did. When they entered the stadium for the first time, there was a large pack and they were moving fast. With each successive lap the pack thinned out and by the last entrance to the stadium is was down to two athletes. McFarland sophomore Erik Garcia was leading Wasco senior Cesar Patino by a stride and they kept this distance the whole lap and half around the track. In the end Garcia won by less than one second in a time of 15:47.

It was a good thing he did win because his squad ended up tying Madera South for first. The Cougars went 1-4-5 but Madera South had five runners in the top 12. The final scores were:

• McFarland 41
• Madera South 41
• Highland 85
• Wasco 95
• Ridgeview 127

I also reviewed the score of the boy's race and came up with a different result as well. If one uses the results the meet sent out, McFarland won 41 to Maders South's 42.

Host school McFarland won the frosh/soph girls and jv boys and girls team titles.

Team Times:

Boys: McFarland won the meet because of their 6th man but Madera South had a faster team time by 26 seconds. After writing the preceding, I got complete results and found the team score to be McFarland 41 Madera South 42.

The team battle in varsity boys between Central Section #2 McFarland and
#3 Madera South came down to number 6 runner after a 41 all tie. Madera
South lost due to not having a sixth runner. Electing to run two younger
varsity runners in the F/S race.

In the girls varsity race defending DII Central Champion Tulare Union,
squeaked out a 1 point victory over a much improved Madera South team
43 to 45. The team battle was close between 4 teams until the last mile
when both Central Section DIII Runner-up Ridgeview and DIV 2009
champion McFarland faded. With the McFarland and Ridgeview coming
good performances three days before a the East Bakersfield Invite.

Indiviually, Tierra Lynch of Ridgeview defended her title, covering the 5k
course in 18:44 for an almost one minute victory. Super 10th grader Erik
Garcia won in a new course 15:47.1 to Wasco's Cesar Patino 15:47.9

Where: McFarland High School 259 West Sherwood Avenue
Divisions: Varsity, JV, F/S Boys and Girls Divisions
Distance: Varsity Races 5k, F/S and J/V 2.1 miles

Awards: Top 30 in each race receive medals. Varsity Top 35
receive medals. Top 3 indiviuals in race will receive awards as well.

Team Awards: Top 3 Varsity teams receive plaques. 1st and 2nd place
F/S and J/V plaques

Fees: Checks payable: McFarland High School Cross Country
Fees not paid at meet day will be doubled.
Entry Fee: $6.00 per indiviual and $200 maximum
