2008 Coverage HERE.

It was a chilly morning but perfect for a long run. The crowd was a lot thinner this year and I believe this is due in part to the Fresno and Santa Clarita races the previous weekend. It is hard to compete with this big races with all their perks. The chip timing, dry-fit shirts, giant sized medals and courses that run through the city streets.

One thing those big city races do not have a chance to run with family and friends and not be crushed by the waves of humanity at the start, on the course and at the finish area. Plus those races do not have "Even as I Speak" Peter Wonderly as an MC or the excitement of the Manor street tunnel.

  • In the 1 to 19 age group South High athlete Daniel Little won in a time of 1:27:49 and Jen Hawthorne ran 1:47:43 for the girl's win.
  • Training partners Ian Heiter (1:26:52) and Brooklan Rosales (1:35) took 1st and 2nd in their age groups. Brooklan ran the Fresno half last Sunday in 1:36. She was past in the closing miles by Kristin Buckley who was the first female in a time of 1:33.
  • The overall winner was David Bacus in 1:14:33 who ran in the 25 to 29 where local KGET anchor Kiyoshi Tomano (1:48) took third,
  • Several of my running campers ran in the 30 - 34 age group which was won by Stockdale cross coach Bree Tape whose girl' squad went 6 - 0 in duals and won last week's SWYL league meet as well. Running camper Megan Gonzalez ran 2:36, Nicki Gilbert ran 2:51 and Erin Gayer ran 2:53.
  • Fellow camper and head recruiter Lisa Sorenson ran 2:34, while her teammate David Plyler came in second in the 40 to 44 in a time of 1:39. Also in this age group Jenny Angel who most certainly won the rock n roll division in a time of 2:19.
  • After youngster Bacus was 45 - 49 age group winner Jvier Cruz in a time of 1:21 and not to far behind him was Tim Anderson who won the 50 - 54 on a time of 1:25. Also running in this age group were running campers Kim Nance (2:19) and Diana Daves (2:22) who were running their first ever half marathons.

Online registration is available at Active.com. Or you can download a printable entry form.

Two Halves Make a Whole
If you complete both half marathons in the same year, you will automatically be counted as having completed the "Two Halves Make a Whole." The only awards here are for overall fastest combined times. Your finisher's medal for each half marathon is actually half of the total finisher's medal. Fit the 2 together for the year to get your complete medal. Finisher's certificates will be sent to those who complete both halves.

The November Half (second annual) also starts from Yokut's park, but this time runners head East on the bike path towards Bakersfield's bluffs before heading back.
5K Courses at each event head in the opposite direction from the half marathon. The 5K is always a competitive event which draws both serious 5K competitors and people who want something to do while waiting to cheer for a friend or family member as they finish their longer race.
Water will be on the course about every 3.5 miles. (at the turn around for the 5K)

Registration
Besides the registration options at the top of the page, you can also register on the day of the event at Yokut's Park in Bakersfield, CA between 6:30 am and 7:45 am while those who pre-registered quickly pick up their goody bags.

Stuff for You
Awards will go 3 deep in 5 year age groups for both the 5K and half marathon at each event. The half marathon finishers get a finisher's medal that interlocks with the finisher's medal from the other half marathon that year. Quality long sleeve shirt. Finisher's certificates for those who finish both halves. In addition, people who run both halves in a single calendar year will receive a special giveaway (the 2007 special giveaway was a light weight running jacket).

Results
Race results will be posted the same day of the event here on this website. Check out results for some of our past events. If you ran the February, 2008 half marathon, and run the half marathon on November 15, 2008, your two times will be combined for the "2 Halves Make a Whole" marathon.

2009 5k Results HERE.

Today's 5k was a fast one with many former high school harriers coming home to renew old high school rivalries. In the end CSUB's Ryan Lucker (Stockdale) took the win with a 15:52 clocking.

He was followed by Andrew Ariey's (Bakersfield High) training partner and fellow Cal Poly SLOer, Michael Marlin who beat his host 16:11 to 16:16. Ariey finally beat former East High runner Oscar Fuentes (Cal Poly SLO) who ran 16:19. Another former Driller (John Purcell) ran 18:14 for 6th place overall.

Because the valley meet is this Thurday, very few high school runners competed today. Adam Ralls (North) ran 18:16 for 7th and he was followed by Chris Hernandez (Ridgeview) who ran 18:38. Future Driller Scott Van Matre ran 22:23 for 33rd place. Stockdale's Cynthia Lopez (whose team just won an SWYL title) won the 15 -19 group with a 20:08 clocking.

The first women was CSUB's Lina Nunez (East) who came in 12th overall in a time of 19:25. Looking down the 20 to 29 list, I see that tv news anchor Jennifer Duck ran 26:59 for 88th place.

The wizard of the keyboard and race results magic, Jonathan Wykoff won the 40 - 49 age group with a 19:33 clocking and a 13th place finish. To prove age is just a number, Brian Nelson (Arvin XC coach) ran 18:08 for the 50 to 59 win and an 8th place overall finish.

But topping these performances was 58 year old Lupe Eberly's 23:21 and 62 year old Herve Pastre's 18:46 clocking for 9th place overall! These two would be wekcome additions on many local high school cross country squads btw. A couple other fine performances were Marvis Friesen's 30:03 win in the 60 to 69 age group and Becky Whitehead running 32:50 for the 70 to 79 win.

Boot camper Natalie Dilley ran 26:37 annd came in second in the 30 - 39 age group and running camper Pamela Plyler ran 27:59

2009 10k Results HERE. Because of the construction of a new road just before the aid station, the 10 k was longer then before. I have been told the turn around was the same which made the course long because one has to head north a ways to run under the road before heading west again.

Several GPS watches had the course between 6.3 and 6.35 miles long and a 10k is suppose to be 6.2 miles. A tenth of a mile adds 36 seconds for someone running 6 minute pace and a minute for those running 10 minute miles. to get your 10k time from today's result, multiple your time by 0.98

The overall 10k winner was last year's winner too. Keith Hankins and his dog ran 32:21 which is a very fast time for Bakersfield. Usually sub 36 and sometimes sub 40 takes the win around here. His adjusted time would be 31:50 or so which is around 5:10 pace. His 5k split was as fast as Lucker's winning time of 15:52 I bet. Bakersfield's David Bacus ran 34:27 for second in the 20 to 29.

Former Ridgeviewer, Linda Gonzales won the 15 to 19 age group with a 48:13 clocking. Amanda Beardsley won the 20 to 29 with a 41:10 clocking which was 6 minutes faster then second place.

5th in this age group was one of my running campers, Lyndi Wilson (Centennial) who ran 53:03 (sub 52 adjusted time). Her mom, Denise Jorgensen (another running camper) caught Lyndi in the final miles and ran 52:28 (sub 51:30 adjusted) for fourth place in the 40 to 49.

There were a couple fast unfamiliar faces at today's race. one of those was Toshi Hosaka who won the 30 to 39 age group in a time of 36:51. A familiar face was KGET's Kiyoshi Tomono who ran 49:30.

In the 30 -39 were a couple more of my running campers. Lisa Sorenson ran 59:32 (58:20 adjusted time), Meagan Gonzalez ran 1:11:21 (sub 59 adjusted time) and Nicki Gilbert ran 1:12:14 (sub 71 minutes adjusted time).

Pam Boyles was second overall women with a time of 42:37 in the 40 - 49 and running camper David Plyler ran 45:35.

In the men's 50 to 59 Chris Posey won in a time of 43:29 and was followed by Klaus Benamy - Hackel who ran 46:26. In a time of 1:21:27 was 72 year old Emma Williams who with her husband Hal hosted the BTC Hart Park for many years.

2009 Law Enforcement HERE.

The first Law Enforcement runner in the 5k was a women. Casey Holman ran 21:28. In the 10k they have SWAT BPD in a time of 25:42 which would be a world record btw. After them was Damacio Diaz who ran 40:01. I also see that Bob Barton ran 50:49 despite recently giving blood (he told me this as he ran by). His daughter Ashley is an outstanding runner for Liberty and came in fourth in the SEYL meet this week. She also won the Ron's Run 10K. Speaking of parent/child combos, Tabitha Raber ran 1:01:47 and her daughter Sara Stidham (Bakersfield High) ran 1:00:53.

Race Preview:

The cost of the race is $20 if received by 11/3 or $25 the day of the race. Registration will be open at 0630 with the fun run 2k will begin at 0800 and the timed 5k and 10k will begin at 0830. All proceeds pay for the education of children who are survivors of BPD officers killed in the line of duty. For further information contact Andrea Pflugh at 661-326-3685. Download an entry form.

Liberty & Golden Valley at Garces

No surprises in the boy's races Sandles (Golden Valley) won in a time of 16:26 and Liberty won both team races as expected. Liberty was lead by Kevin Shotts (16:52) and Garces was lead by Conner O'Malley in a time of 16:45.

The girl's race was much different, Garces came into the meet with a 3 - 1 record and looked to be having one of it's best seasons in recent memory. They barely lost to BHS earlier in the year and have looked good all season long but today things fell apart.

I had heard that the team has been hit hard by the flu and I assume that this was the case today. I heard their leader Guzman dropped out at the mile and the team not only lost to Liberty but Golden Valley beat them too.

Liberty was lead by Ashley Barton who won the 3 mile race in a time of 19:58

Highland & Foothill at Bakersfield

What a difference a year makes. Last year this season ending meet matched undefeated Highland and the Drillers. The race was hard fought and Highland ended up winning 26 to 29 and ended the season undefeated in duels. The Drillers were 5 and 1 and took second overall behind Highland in the SEYL.

This year Highland has not had any competition and has been posting a lot of 15s on people (their scoring five beats the other school's first runner). They have been lead by senior Colin Lewis (16:32) who is also undefeated in duels this season as well. The are almost assured of yet another SEYL title and are looking to win valley after coming in second the past two seasons.

The Drillers on the other hand have gone from 5 and 1 to 0 and 5. Their postponed meet with Golden Valley will be a battle of the defeateds when it is contested. BHS did manage to escape getting the dreaded 15 to 50 score, where the other school's seven come in before your first runner. Tony Smith ran 18:06 to save them from this fate.

Foothill was lead by Erick Bautista (16:44) and appears to be missing its top runner Jose Lopez. The Trojans ended the year with a 4 - 2 duel meet record, which guarantees them second since only Liberty could tie them and their last meet is against Highland.

On the girl's side, Sarah Baker continued her winning ways with a 19:24 clocking on her home course to lead her Driller's to a 5 - 0 record. With only Golden Valley in their way, the Drillers should have back to back undefeated duel meet seasons. At the SEYL league meet, they will be going for their second overall team title in three seasons and Sarah will be going for her third individual title.

Like the boys, the Lady Trojans are also 4 - 2 for the season and will be battling Liberty or Highland for second place overall in the SEYL. Liberty and Highland are 3 - 2 and have to make up their postponed meet this month. Highland has been lead all season by Rodriguez (20:02) and her team mates have been improving throughout the season.

Frontier vs Centennial at West

The boy's race between Centennial and Frontier looks like it was a good one with ten athletes within a minute of each other. The race was won by Beechinor (17:04) by 3 seconds over Millan (17:07) of Centennial. With their two wins today, Frontier is now 2 - 2 and Centennial is 2 - 3 in SWYL duel meet action.

The girl's races were really close and I am sure it took a bit of ciphering to figure out what happen. In the end, came away with two very close wins. they beat West by three and Centennial by one. Their SWYL record is now 2 - 2. Frontier was lead D La Rosa (20:31) who came in second overall in the double duel.

The Golden Hawks beat West by one point also. They were lead by Jorey Braughton (20:37) who came third overall in the double duel.

The one bright spot for West was that their runner Habebo won the overall race in a time of 20:14. it is also good to see the Vikings being competitive again. Over the past seasons they have been handed a lot of 15 to 40+ scores (Other team's scoring five beats their top runner). This season they beat South and gave both Frontier and Centennial a run for their money.

The Wolf Pack Leads the Way

Fresh off their win at their home invite and many other wins this year, Ridgeview moves to number three in the overall valley rankings. Stockdale stays in 7th despite wining the Clovis West Invite and running well at Woodbridge.

Shafter jumped from 20th to 13th and recently placed second at the Wolf Pack Invite. Other Kern squads in the top 20 are Garces (16th), North (17th) and Highland (20th).

Week #4 (September 28)

Varsity Girls

Overall score last week

1. Buchanan 65 1
2. Clovis 166 2
3. Ridgeview 228 5 - Have been winning just about everything the enter from duel meets to invites.
4. Clovis East 246 3
5. Bullard 252 6
6. Madera South 312 4
7.Stockdale 323 7 - Great pack running squad without a front runner. Ran well at Woodbridge.
8. Clovis North 369 10
9. Mt. Whitney 413 8
10.Tulare 480 9
11. Firebaugh 487 12
12. Clovis West 490 11
13. Shafter 494 20 - Tied Ridgeview at McLane Invite and came in second to them at Wolf Pack Invite
14. Central Valley Christian 535 13
15. Sunnyside 561 16
16. Garces 610 17
17. North Bakersfield 657 NR - Lead by Moyer, this young keeps improving every week.
18. Mission Prep 672 NR
19.Golden West 709 18
20. Highland 715 NR - Coach Mayberry squads do not come out to play until it counts.

Division I - The Clovis and Fresno schools are so tough that it is doubtful any Kern team will make state in this division. Stockdale has a shot with their tightly bunch pack of runners but they will all have to drop some time to make it into the top three and go to state.

Interestingly 10th ranked Bakersfield has the most upside in making state if they could find a fifth runner. Lead by junior Sarah Baker, her and her three junior team mates (Emily Shuford, Gabby Lerma and Gracie Garcia) won a SEYL title in 2007, went undefeated in duels in 2008 and are undefeated in duels this year. Sarah has a great shot at making state as an individual (have to get in the top 12 or 15 in the race) and if they can get one other girl under 22, they might have a shot.

1. Buchanan 30 1
5. Stockdale 109 5
9. Centennial 270 8
10. Bakersfield 325 10

Division II - The past seasons Garces has been Monica Guzman but this season they are a team. They barely lost to the Drillers early in the season but have been winning duels ever since. This division usually sends the most Kern athletes to state as individuals and this maybe the case again this year. Besides Guzman, Liberty's Barton, Foothill's Fernandez and North's Moyer all have shots at making state. Plus other Highland and North girls maybe have a chance too.

1. Mt. Whitney 118 1
4. Garces 168 6
5. North (Bakersfield) 180 8
6. Highland 195 NR*
8. Liberty (Bakersfield) 230 7
9. Foothill 232 4

Division III - The Wolf Pack are defending valley champs and look like they will be repeating especially since they picked up some talented freshman.

1. Ridgeview 86 2
4. Shafter 175 4
5. Independence 279 8

Division IV

1. Firebaugh 109 1

Wildcats take Individual titles at the Black Gold Rush 5k

Taft Wildcat Black Gold Rush 5k
Results
Oct. 3, 2009

These race was held in conjunction with the Oildarado Days weekend out at Taft so it was only fitting that Taft athletes won the races. Long ago, in the 80s, I won this race and got a nice belt buckle.

The race director (Barry Jameson who (ran 24:48) is the Taft High cross country coach) said: "We are going to have a huge race for Oildarado next year. Maybe have a big purse at the end for the fastest, and have teams."

Perhaps he could get Taft's most famous runner Billy Nelson (2008 Olympic Steeplechaser) to run too!

Sloan & Guzman Win the BC Invite 5k

Blair Sloan (Stockdale) ran 16:36 and Monica Guzman (Garces, see photo) ran 20:24 for the individual wins at the BC Invite at the soccer complex near CALM. The 5k course is a challenging course in that it is similar to Woodward Park in some ways.

The course has a lot of thick grass, some hills and some dirt trails too. The start is at one end of the large soccer complex which allows for a large field to thin out before getting on the bike path. The course goes uphill for awhile on the bike path and then returns along a rolling dirt trial that runs along the river. Then it does a U-turn and gets back on the bike path for the return trip to the soccer complex finish where the grass was long and there was water on the fields too.

The fields were large for this meet because there was only one race for each gender. So the frosh/soph, jv and varsity ran together. While good for some hoping to crack their varsity roster, many would of been happy to do their usual 2 mile race.
In the girl's team race, North took the team title with an excellent 2,3,4 finish. Lead by Kaylee Moyer (20:31), the Stars beat Stockdale 50 to 68. However, Stockdale was missing two of their top runners in Nelson and Patel who out ran Moyer on Wednesday at the duel meet.

With this win, North is showing that it is getting better and better with each meet and they have a large squad to draw from like Stockdale. Having a top three run 20:31, 20:45 (E. Perez) and 21:05 (Y. Perez) is a sign that they are becoming a team to beat especially in big field invites.

Rounding out the top ten were:
  • 5th -Lucia Garcia (East) 21:10
  • 6th - Ashley Barton (Liberty) 21:14
  • 7th - Carolin Haney (Stock) 21:20
  • 8th - Hannah Jones (Stock) 21:20
  • 9th - Acadia Ingram (Independence) 21:38
  • 10th Tori Blackmon (Stock) 21:39

In the boy's race, Stockdale went 1,2,3 and 5th with only Golden Valley's Daymon Sandles breaking up their pack of four. Stockdale took the team win with 27 points and were followed by East with 63. I believe this was East's first invite of the season.

The boy's top ten:
  1. Blair Slaton (Stock) 16:36
  2. Curtis Kelly (Stock) 16:42
  3. Cameron Miller (Stock) 16:47
  4. Daymon Sandles (Golden Valley) 16:58
  5. Conner Fisher (Stock) 17:07
  6. Conner O'Malley (Garces) 17:20
  7. Jose Ramirez (East) 17:26

Mcfarland Boys Win Rubber Match

Golden West Invitational @ Cutler Park in Visalia.
2009 Photos HERE.
2009 Complete Results HERE.

It was a draw but now Mcfarland has taken the rubber match and beat Ridgeview fairly convincingly and came close to beating division one power Clovis West (1. Clovis West 61 2. McFarland 69 3. Ridgeview 96) at this week's meet at Cutler Park.

Once again Mcfarland did it with there pack running style, they were lead by freshman Erick Garcia (16:19) who came in 7th overall. He was followed by:

13. Jose Monrreal (McFarland) 16:46
14. Marco Camargo (McFarland) 16:47
16. Francisco Nava (McFarland) 16:54
19. Marco Perez (McFarland) 17:01

Having your top five in the top 19 is excellent at a meet of this caliber. Their time spread of 42 seconds for the three mile course will tighten up even more as the season progresses. Besides taking second overall, the Cougars won the medium size school division (1. McFarland 19 2. Parlier 58 3. Exeter 60 4. Yosemite 103 5. Granite Hills 139 6. Kingsburg 156 7. Orosi 177)

Ridgeview was lead by Robby Baker (Sr) who came in second overall in 16:00. He was followed by his team Alex Garcia who ran 16:02. Scoring 5 points with your first two runners is a coaches dream but no other Ridgeviwer cracked the top 20 and hence the other three athletes score 94 points. In the extra large schools division, Ridgeview took second (1. Clovis West 32 2. Ridgeview 42 3. Tulare Western 84 4. Clovis East 95 5. Reseda 141 6. Hoover 145).

6. Desiree Armendariz (Ridgeview) 20:30
10. Jessica Huizar (Ridgeview) 21:01

It appears that Ridgeview had it's second tie of the season in the Extra Large School Division:

Do Not Miss This SWYL Showdown!

Today was the battle between the undefeated and it lived up to the hype. All three squads had large numbers and there were a lot of fans at the meet too. Zach Ewing from the paper was there to report on the meet as well. His accurate scoring of the meet as soon as the last scoring runner came in was appreciated.

2009 photos HERE.

The course was very well marked and much of the race could be seen from the visitor stands. A nice touch at this meet was Coach Setser (Ridgeview) introduced each varsity athlete as they took the starting line. Many of the athletes did not know what to make of this and that made the gesture even better.

In the girls race, Lynch took the early lead as expected but the team battle was behind her. As the race entered the last mile it looked as though Ridgeview had the win but coming down the homestretch things changed. Amber Nelson caught and passed a couple Ridgeview runners and Carolin Haney ran a gutsy race (she was very sick).

As I looked over Ewing's shoulder we both did the math and got 28 for Stockdale and after a few errors we got 28 for Ridgeview. Then we double checked because many thought the girl's race would not be very close. But it was a tie! So the race came down to the 6th runner and Stockdale was the winner.

In the boys race, Stockdale tried to stay up with Ridgeview's top guns early on but could not hang on. Alex Garcia and Robby Baker of Ridgeview (Alex won the sprint)) entered the track together with a sizable lead over Blair Slaton and Curtis Kelly of Stockdale. In the end, Ridgeview's top 4 where too much for Stockdale to overcome.

Girl's team score -- Stockdale 28, Ridgeview 28, with the underdog Mustangs the winner on sixth runner.

Ridgeview's Tijerra Lynch, finished in 18:55, about 20 seconds off her best. Stockdale's Riddhi Patel was second in 19:43, and Ridgeview's Desiree Aremendariz next in 19:49. With Tori Blackmon, fourth in 19:50, and Nelson, Stockdale's No. 4 runner (running with a hip-flexor injury) finished fifth in the race in 20:10.

Ridgeview held off Stockdale 24-31 in the boys showdown between the teams, with Wolf Pack teammates Alex Garcia (15:39) and Robby Baker (15:40) neck-and-neck for the top two spots.
Stockdale's Blair Slaton (16:11) and Curtis Kelly (16:12) were third and fourth.

Meet Preview:
Both squads are undefeated in SWYL duels and both squads have won invites on the boys and girls sides. But one thing have not done is race against each other this season. Well Wednesday at Ridgeview they will.

Both schools have run Woodward Park this season. The 5k course is where valley and state are held. Ridgeview ran their first meet of the year there and won the McLane Highlander Invite instead of running the EB Invite that Stockdale won. Last weekend, Stockdale won the Clovis West Invite at Woodward instead of competing at Ridgeview's Wolf Pack Invite where Ridgeview took a close second behind McFarland

Now comparing a first meet performance to Stockdale's more recent performance is not ideal but it was over 100 when Stockdale ran. With these factors in mind, below are the school's times:
  1. baker,robby 16:33 12 ridgeview
  2. kelly,curtis 17:05 10 stockdale
  3. garcia,alex 17:07 12 ridgeview
  4. miller,cameron 17:16 stockdale
  5. solis,brian 17:39 12 ridgeview
  6. slaton,blair 17:41 stockdale
  7. fisher,connor 17:47 stockdale
  8. lewis,jerrid 17:51 12 ridgeview
  9. pennel,seth 18:28 stockdale
  10. magno 18:30 ridgeview
A duel meet on paper would score:

Ridgeview - 1,3,5,8,10 for 27
Stockdale - 2,4,6,7,9 for 28

Next Wednesday, it ain't on paper! So don't miss this SWYL showdown at Ridgeview!

On the girl's side it will also be close. Again one is comparing a season opener meet to a recent meet but the weather was brutal for Stockdale. One thing to also note is Patel ran in the frosh/soph race at Woodward for Stockdale and this week she won the double duel meet against North and Centennial.

Below are the team's Woodward Park times for this season:

  1. Lynch; 21:11; Ridgeview
  2. Huizar, 21:33 Ridgeview
  3. Carolin Haney Jr 103 12 22:02
  4. Armendariz, 22:24 Ridgeview
  5. Amber Nelson Jr 109 20 23:14
  6. Cynthia Lopez Jr 106 21 23:35
  7. Shelbe Pennel Sr 111 26 24:03
  8. Jennifer Hawthorne Jr 104 29 24:31
  9. Carr, 24.46 Ridgeview
  10. Morgan, 25:59 Ridgeview

Ridgeview 1,2,4,9,10,= 26
Stockdale 3,5,6,7,8 = 29

But if you factor in Patel's Woodward time:
  1. Lynch; 21:11; Rid
  2. Huizar, 21:33 Rid
  3. Riddhi Patel Fr 110 1 21:36
  4. Carolin Haney Jr 103 12 22:02
  5. Armendariz, 22:24 Rid
  6. Amber Nelson Jr 109 20 23:14
  7. Cynthia Lopez Jr 106 21 23:35
  8. Shelbe Pennel Sr 111 26 24:03
  9. Carr, 24.46 Rid
  10. Morgan, 25:59 Rid
Ridgeview 1,2,5,9,10 = 27
Stockdale 3,4,6,7,8 = 28

So needless to say both races show be really close baring any injuries or illness.

They plan to run 6 races. Which will allow for room at the start for all runners as well as a chance for our lower level kids to shine in their respective races. Below is the tentative schedule for races, if they can get ahead they will. .

Race Preview:
This event is for a good cause and it is not your cut n paste race on the bike path. I had to cover a meet out of town last year but ran the event in 2007. It was the first time I had seen Chris Schwartz (photo) at a local road race and he ran the 10k for the first time too. This was the year he won his first state cross country title. That day he easily won the 10k btw.

The race starts at the CALM parking lot and goes down a closed road towards Lake Ming. In 2007 the 5k was out back from Lake Ming and the 10k was the same except one did a couple loops behind the lake. The loop ran on the bike path and then down on the trial that ran parallel to the bike path. The long uphill near the finish line made for an interesting finish.

Hopefully, after the awards, you will be able to drive over to Hart Park and watch the varsity races of the Kern County Invite as well.

Kern Boy's Teams are on Top of the Charts

Week #4 (September 28) so mcfarland jump from number 5 to number 2 in the overall rankings complied by Larry Lung. They bumped ridgeview out of the second spot btw.

Another big mover was Stockdale who moved up 4 spots. the Mustangs have been on the road every weekend and have been putting in impressive times with their tightly bunched pack of five.

On Friday, Ridgeview will meet McFarland at the Golden West Invite for their rubber match. Stockdale ironically will stay in town and run the BC Open Invite starting at 11am at the Soccer Complex near Hart Park.

Varsity Boys

Overall score last week

14. Shafter 551 15 - Looked good at Wolf Pack Invite
15. Bullard 578 20
16. Wasco 605 17 - Shafter's main competition in the SSL
17. Redwood 605 16
18. East Bakersfield 620 19 After an early season lost to Highland they have been winning duals and skipping invites.
19. Golden West 629 14
20. Parlier 698 NR

Divisional Rankings compiled by Larry Lung, Central California Cross Country Chair

Division I - Buchanan is the 900 lb gorilla in this division and despite losing some great runners to grauation they are still the top team in the valley and one of the top teams in the state. Clovis West is ranked number two even though Stockdale won their invite last week. CW's top runners went to the Stanford Invite instead of running their own invite. despite getting roughed up by it's league mates, Centennial is ranked number 8.

1. Buchanan 27 1
2. Clovis West 57 2
3. Stockdale 70 4 - The Mustangs won a meet at Woodward & ran well at Woodbridge
8. Centennial 217 9 - Improving each meet but in a Tough league and division

Division II - Highland has had an easy time of it so far in the SEYL and has been racking up quite a few 15s along the way. They even scored a 15 on third ranked East, but since that meet East has been improving and hiding out on the weekends.

1. Highland 71 1 - Where they hope to be in November. Sat out Wolf Pack Invite due to illness & travel conflicts
3. East Bakersfield 134 5 - Improving each week but not running invites so far this season
8. North (Bakersfield) 184 8 - Same problem Centennial has.
9. Liberty (Bakersfield) 217 10 - Have not seen them lately.

Division III - After losing their invite to Mcfarland, the Wolf Pack blitzed the Frontier course on Wednesday. Baker went sub 15 and Garcia was not to far behind. Look for Shafter to make a move up the ranks soon but they have Madera South ahead of them and they are tough.

1. Ridgeview 72 1 - Defeated McFarland once this season and look to do it again. Plus big duel meet next week against Stockdale (both squads are undefeated)
5. Shafter 210 5 Did well at Wolf pack with a huge squad of athletes
6. Wasco 230 6
8. Foothill 343 8 Trojans also have a lot of athletes and as the season progresses some will step up and make an impact on varsity

Division IV - The Cougars have won the valley division four title almost every year and should do the same this year. Their goal is to get that elusive tenth state title and their training has been geared for that goal. But with a lost to Ridgeview at their own invite, they maybe focusing more on these early season battles.

1. McFarland 47 1 - Ranked number 2 overall in the valley and the only school in ages to break 85 minutes at Woodward. Losing to Ridgeview might have been the best thing for them
9. Taft 314 7

Like the Boys, the Ridgeview Girls are Top Ranked

Three weeks into the season and the Ridgeview girls are the top ranked Kern County team according to Larry Lung (Central California Cross Country Chair). The Wolf Pack has been racking up wins all season and he has them 5th in the valley followed by Stockdale in 7th.

Stockdale won the EB Invite and ran some fast times at Woodbridge last weekend.

Rounding out his top 20 overall are:
  • Foothill (15) - Recently won the Independence Invite
  • Garces (17) - They just beat Foothill in a duel meet
  • Centennial (19) - Getting better every week
  • Shafter (20) - Tied Ridgeview at the McLane Invite (won the 6th runner tie breaker). This weekend at the Wolf Pack is their first big meet of the year and I expect them to move up the rankings soon.
Overall rankings are great but in cross country valley and state are run in divisions and below is how Mr. Lung has our local schools ranked.

Division I

1. Buchanan 31 1
2. Clovis 50 2
3. Clovis East 83 3
4. Bullard 102 4
5. Stockdale 120 6 - Their top five are within a minute of each other.
6. Clovis West 129 5
7. Golden West 199 8
8. Centennial 207 9
9. Madera 232 7
10. Bakersfield 330 10 - The Drillers came in second behind Stockdale at the EB Invite and should be ranked higher despite the lack of a 5th runner (their top four is that good).

Division II

1. Mt. Whitney 101 1
2. Tulare 102 2
3. El Diamante 149 4
4. Foothill 150 5 - Are 2 and 1 in duel meets with a large team to draw from
5. Sunnyside 157 3
6. Garces 158 6 - Also 2 and 1 in duels meets. For several seasons Guzman was alone but now a team has been built around her.
7. Liberty (Bakersfield) 204 7 - Lead by standout Ashley Barton, I have heard that her team mates are getting better.
8. North (Bakersfield) 209 10 - The Stars are a young team that maybe surprise many like their leader Moyer did her freshman year.
9. Sanger 224 8
10.Monache 230 9

Division III

1. Madera South 105 1
2. Ridgeview 107 2 - Defending valley champs, enough said.
3. Clovis North 146 3
4. Shafter 240 4 - A young squad who can keep up with the Wolf Pack.
5. Highland 248 6 - Coach Mayberry's teams are always in the hunt for state berth come November
6. Redwood 288 5
7. Exeter 290 7
8. Independence 324 - Have a returning state qualifier and seniors this year.
9. Delano 360 8
10. Hoover 363 10

Division IV

1. Firebaugh 102 1
2. Taft 183 2 - Lead by Megan Thompson, she hopes to lead her team to a state berth.
3. McFarland 195 4 - Hopes to replicate their boys success but I hear key runners are not competing this year for them.
4. Sierra 251 6
5. Orange Cove 274 7
6. Fowler 283 8
7. Corcoran 295 10
8. Woodlake 314 NR
9. Liberty (Madera) 330 NR
10. Farmersville 343 9
