Returning Finalists?

The leading potential returnee to the state meet has to be Shafter's Ana Jelmini who is the defending state champ in the shot and the discus. this Arizona State bound senior recently broke the national record in the discus and moved to number two all-time in the shot.

Alex Collatz (Stockdale 10) came in fourth in the discus and this year hope to make it in both throws and the triple jump.

Johnny Carter (Ridgeview 10) came on strong in the final meets of the season and won the triple jump last year as a freshman! Since then he has grown a lot physically (I did not recognize him from last year when the season started) and has been battling injuries. But he made it to valley and one should never count him out.

On the track, Kern County only has one potential finalist returning. Chris Schwartz (Foothill 12) had a front row seat to one of the most impressive doubles in high school distance running when German Fernandez broke the national record in the 3200 and ran 4:00.29 in the 1600 earlier in the meet. The CalPoly SLO bound Schwartz came in second and ran a PR of 8:58 in the 3200.

In the horizontal jumps, Washington State bound Alana Alexander (Centennial 12) surprised many by making the finals in both jumps.

Field of Dreams

Kern County has plenty of chances at placing high and making it to state in many field events.

Ana Jelmini (Shafter) broke the national record in the discus and is second all-time in the shot. Her teammate, Lacie Rasley will be vying for a state berth in both throws too.

Lastly, Alex Collatz (Stockdale) will be more than likely get the other spots to state in the throws. She also has a good shot to make it in the triple jump too. If she had not recently hurt her ankle and the rules allowed it, she could of qualified for valley in the long jump and high jump too! Plus she is only a sophomore.

Alana Alexander (Centennial) has signed with Washington State and hopes to return to state in both horizontal jumps and Shanesha Epps looks to qualify in the long jump. Lastly, Amanda Klinchuch is the ranked second in the valley in the pole vault.

One the boys side, Matt Darr (Frontier) looks to follow in Foothill's Dayshan Ragans and win both events and then try to win both at state too. Highland's Austin Jordan is looking good in both throws too.

In the long jump, Liberty's Affentranger is the top ranked long jumper in the valley and Ridgeview's Johnny Carter is the defending state champ in the triple jump. In the high jump, Garce's Phillip McCullom has gone 6'8 this season and George Robbins of west is at 6'6 and both have excellent chances of making it to state.

Making It Right

Ridgeview has one of the best times going into this meet, when at league they ran an uncontested 3:19. But the last time they were at Buchanan, they were DQed by their own coach for taunting/showboating at the end of the race and first place went to Buchanan.

This time around they are running for more than a sweatshirt.

On the track, Bakersfield's female athletes are going to have to run races of their lives to make state in most events minus Taylor Jackson in the hurdles. The same will be true in the 4 x 400.

Qualify or Let One Fly

The past two valley championships Hasay has run in the 10:20 range and qualified easily for the state meet. This year she is scheduled to run the 800 earlier in the meet, which is something she has not done before.

The race for the top three state berths should be fierce. The At-Large standard is a quick 10:47. Hopefully, the Bakersfield girls
will improve on their Area times.

The Minefield

Bakersfield has three squads in the fast heat. With bad handoffs, lost shoes (Purvis of Ridgeview got stepped on by his teammate at the West Coast Relays and his shoe when flying through the air. He still ran a fast leg with one shoe btw) and DQs anything can and will happen.

At the first meet of the year (Clovis Sprint Classic) Buchanan threw done a very fast time and have been the valley leaders all season long.

Will She Double Down?

Before she heads off to Oregon for college, the central valley will get to see Jordan run two more times (valley and state). The photo on the left was taken at last year's valley meet at Liberty and is most viewed photo on my flickr account.

Every time I am at a meet that she is running, I never seemed to get good shots. The main reason is at valley cross country, her division runs real early and I seem to get there as she is finishing. Then at track meets, she usually only runs the 3200 and by then the lighting is bad and my cameras do not work well in low light.

But this year's valley, maybe different because she is expected to run the 800 and the light will be better. The 800/3200 double seems to be an odd one since they are fairly close together, the 800 will be at 6:40pm and the 3200 is scheduled to be run at 7:40pm. Usually distance runners do the 1600/3200 double.

Though Jordan has the best time in the 800, Katie Fry (10) is not that far behind and has been improving throughout the season. I first saw her this season at the Buchanan Distance Classic where she won the 800in 2:22. Now she is ten seconds faster.

The battle for the third and last ticket to state should be interesting because there were a lot of girls in the 2:19 to 2:21 range at the area meets. 3rd was 2:19.20 and 9th was 2:21.24 and these nine athletes will be in the fast heat. the tenth through 14th marks range from 2:21.29 to 2:22.37 and will be in the slow heat which is unfortunate for the two Bakersfield athletes who are seeded number 13 and 14.

Sarah Baker (Bakersfield 10) has been under 2:20 in previous races and is such a competitor, that she would have an outside shot at vying for the final state berth if she was in the fast heat. Plus I think that the fourth would qualify for state because I can not see Hasay running the 800 at state especially with the prelims on Friday and the final before the 3200 on Saturday. I think she would drop the 800 and focus on setting the national record in the 3200, like German did last year.

A Kern athlete who did run fast enough at her area meet, is Taft's Megan Thompson who is a good 1600 runner and can hold her own in the open 400. In the end, it will be a race between Fry and Hasay and d it would be nice to see both go under 2:10 and the race for third will be a wild one.

The At-Large standard is: 800m 2:12.33. Which I doubt the fourth fastest girl at the meet will go under.

Saturday Night is Alright for ...

The Boys 3200 will be at 8pm on Saturday night. Prime time! The battle for first should be between the usual suspects: Schwartz, Sanchez and Vilhauer from the 1600 and Sanchez's teammate Reedy should be right there for those three qualifying spots for state. The At-Large Standard for the 3200 is 9:12:57 so the Central section could send four athletes to the state meet

The Buchanan athletes will have added incentive to do well because their team is favored to win the team valley title and valley and state are on their home track.

The G.O.A.T.?

He was a Division I state cross-country champion his junior year and Schwartz defended his Central Section title as a senior and finished seventh in the state. Then took first at the Foot Locker Western Regional and eighth at the Foot Locker national race.

In track, he placed second in the state in the 3200 as a junior behind German Fernandez who broke the national record in the event.

Since his sophomore year he has won just about every 1600 and 3200 that he has entered. He even wins the 800 often and then finishes off most meets by anchoring the 4 x 400 where he is usually far behind and gets to work on his last lap speed.

Below is how he stacks up against the best Bakersfield runners of All-Time:
  1. 4:13.0 Tom Elieff Highland-Bakersfield ‘74
  2. 4:14.3 Eddie Granillo East-Bakersfield ‘70
  3. 4:14.72a Chris Schwartz Foothill-Bakersfield ‘09

In the 1600, it should be a race between Schwartz, Sanchez and Vilhaur. Schwartz and Sanchez have been running against each other for four years and Vilhaur (10) is the new kid on the block. It would be great to see Schwartz break 4:13 and take over the top time by a Bakersfield runner. Even if that runner graduated from my high school!

The boys 1600 is scheduled to be run at 5:27 pm.

Jerried & Jake Return to the Mondo

Three Bakersfield athletes have made the fast heat in this event and two of them have a shot at winning the race out right. Jerrid Lewis (Ridgeview 11) has the fastest time in the valley this season and has been winning 800s all season long. He can wait and out sprint you at the end or as he did at area, take it out hard (54 seconds for the first 400) and run a PR.

Highland's Jake Van Zandt (Highland 11) has been the bridesmaid all season long and has the tools to take down a win at valley. Many local coaches are impressed with Jake and coach Mayberry knows how to get his athletes to a peak at the right time. Plus Jake has his teammate in the race with him. Colin Lewis (Highland 11) is known as a 1600 runner but recently PRed at the South Area meet with 1:58.49 clocking. So depending on how the 1600 goes, Colin could help his teammate get the win.

As you can tell this field is fast and packed. Sanchez has had a great career and recently broke his school's record in the 800. Plus Buchanan is the favorite to win the team title, which means he will be a busy athlete at the meet and more than likely triple (8/16/32) at the meet. This is good knews for Jerrid and Jake. I have also heard that Jesse Arrellano is the real deal too.

Bakersfield has five in the 800, the other two are Stephem Burke (Stockdale) and Caleb Barger (Frontier) who are fine 800 runners in there own right. But not being in the fast heat will make scoring in the meet or qualifying for state difficult. Of course, both are underclassmen so the valley experience itself should heed them well in the future.

The boys 800 will be at 6:50pm.

The Road to State

Now that you survived the South Area meet and made the top four in your event or grabbed one of the wild card spots (top three marks at the all area meets combined make it) you are now one step closer to the state meet.

Both the valley and state meet are at Buchanan High school which is good for us valley residents. It is nearby and most local athletes have competed there in the past. Plus they have excellent facilities and know hope to put on a great meet. I look forward to the Buchanan Distance Classic and the West Coast Relays every year.

At the valley meet, the top six places in each will be awarded medals and also score points for their team. First and second place team trophies will also be awarded.

The top three in each event, will qualify for the state meet from the central section:

NUMBER OF COMPETITORS
Sections are allowed the following entries as per State Federated Council rule:
CIF Southern 5 CIF Central 3 CIF Northern 1
CIF North Coast 4 CIF Central Coast 3 CIF San Francisco 1
CIF Los Angeles 3 CIF San Diego 3 CIF Oakland 1
CIF Sac-Joaquin 3

AT-LARGE ENTRIES
Sections may enter additional competitors provided they have met or bettered the “At-Large”
standard for their event in their Section Meet that qualifies athletes for the CIF State Track and Field Championships. The At-Large standards can be found on page six HERE.
