100 Mile Endurance Challenge - Twitter Timeline & My Journey

Linette, Robin, Courtney, Me, Diana and Stephanie
Last year this was my first 100 mile race and I finished in 28:20. This year I finished in 26:33 and I think the conditions were a lot harder. The humidity during the first day just killed me and I was soaked from mile five to the finish for the most part. Plus there was never a breeze the entire time.

  • Having said that, I went faster and so did most of the field but I chalk that up to our experience on the course and some new fast blood that came out for this year's race.
  • My race began at 2am when I woke up in Bakersfield to get ready for my crew captain Stephanie to pick me up. We left Bakersfield at 3:30am and got to the race a little after 6am. It was great to see so many familiar faces and meet some new ones as well.
  • The introductions before the race were great and getting number 7 was an honor. Number one is reserved for Darren Van Soye (The OG RD) and then the numbers were handed out based on our finish times from last year. I was the 7th fastest returner. After the introductions, several people came up to talk to me about my 2011 race and it was so weird to actually have fans.
  • But then it was time to start and i went too hard from the start. Those 11 or 12 minute miles seem so easy plus I wanted to check in with my fellow runners and see what they have been up to. Plus the first 5 miles or so, we have a police escort and I always feel pressure to keep up with the group.

  • But by the time I got to the 6 mile check point, I had come to my senses and started walking a lot more. Until then I had run way too much. Probably 4 minutes then minute walk.

  • Once on the bike path, I started a 2 minute run / minute walk pattern until Yen and Meiko caught me with their pacer Cheryl Z.It was great running with them but they never walk and like to walk. If fact, I am seriously considering abandoning my run / walk strategy and just walk the whole way like Yolanda.
  • Before we go to the 12.5 mile checkpoint, Colleen joined us, this was her first 100 miler. She was also a strong runner but I was able to get her to walk a little with me. At the checkpoint, we all came in together for the most part but as usual I was the first to leave.
  • By now I was already soaked and the chaffing began under my arms and on my hips and buttocks. Now some may say it is the clothes I wear but I have been wearing the same stuff for years with very little chaffage. What cause it this year was the high humidity (big black clouds) and that i was running more. My clothes never got to dry out and having no breeze all day did not help.
  • I had a great crew and extra clothes and medical supplies but just didn't want to spend the time getting fixed up and bedsides I knew my feet would start hurting real bad soon so the abrasions would be a distraction from my feet.
  • At 12.5 miles I was in 29th and was averaging 13:55 per mile pace.

  • The next 12.5 miles were uneventful for the most part I caught up to the Flores brothers who were running their first hundred and Colleen caught me and I we got to see the Angel sign together. As you can tell by the check in times above, there were a number of us together at this point.
  • I got in and out in a couple minutes and Stephanie gave me my sausage croissant from Jack in the Box, which really hit the spot.
  • I moved up a couple places but that was mainly to people dropping out do to injuries. At 25 miles I was 27th in a time of 5:06 (12:12 pace which means mile 25 was not mile 25).
  • The next section was awful for me and I wanted to just quit and go home. I could only run for a minute or so and often the run was slower then the walk.

  • The stretch from Jack in the Box to the beach was lonely and breathless. I was wet and felt really hot. Every six miles I was drinking a can of coconut water,a bottle of Gatorade and a soda and still felt like I was losing a lot of fluid. Plus I was gulping Salt sticks all day. Food wise I didn't want to eat much. I am a pretty good fat burner and just do not eat a lot in races any more.
  • Plus what I bought for myself looked awful. usually I like Rice Krispies, Sweat n Salty bars and Gel Blocks but today I could not eat them. For the most part I ate a banana every six miles and all of my beef jerky by the time I got to the beach. I ate very little nut it did not affect my pace.
  • For most of this stretch, I just walked because my running legs were gone. Several runners including Colleen flew past me. Last year I had pacers from mile 12.5 and I think i needed them today.
  • At the check in I was 26th in a time of 8:43 (13:57 pace). I felt awful too and knew I had 7 plus miles to go before I picked up a pacer.

  • When I got to the beach it was at least a little cooler, still no wind but at least the scenery was different. The one thing I didnt like on this section was the campfires but having people around was helpful so for the first time in hours i tried to run. I would walk a quarter mile and run a quarter mile to the next aid station at 44 miles.
  • This is a good section to get into a rhythm because it is a wide path with no intersections. Plus there are lots of beach goers wandering around. I made pretty good time and then meet up with Linette for the scary PCH section in the dark to Long Beach. This section is up and down curbs and through intersection the whole way.
  • Plus it started to rain a bit which makes safety an even bigger concern. I walked alost the entire way to the 50 check in. I was now in 23rd place in a time of 11:14 which is a PR for me btw. My pace was 13:29). When I got there it was raining and my whole crew was there. I weighed in (lost nothing)  and changed shoes and headed out to Long beach with Courtney.

  • The 5 miles with Courtney, went well but I mainly walked along and took in the sites. Running was pointless and the lovely concrete bike path was killing my feet. I had a few faster runners pass us because they were in the aid station longer than i was at mile 50. I was only there for a few minutes.
  • When we meet up with Linette and Robin, we were heading to where I got lost for 2 miles in the Long Beach Marina. This year I knew where to go plus a couple runners with their pacers were near us through Long Beach and  the LA River section. Once we got off the city streets I resumed my run a quarter / walk a quarter routine.
  • This ended once we left the LA River path and I pretty much walked from San Pedro to Venice (56 miles to 97 miles). My walk was strong but my run was painful and about the same speed. The only time a ran a little is if i got near a fellow racer but that was not very often.
  • The San Pedro section was as ugly as every but did not seem to take as long as it did last year. Linette and robin were great at keeping track of all the cars and crazy intersections and we finally made it to the 62.5 mile check in where there seemed to be quite a few racers. I was 23rd in a time of 14:32 (13:57 pace) I did not stay long and put my original Hokas back on and headed out to Wilmington and the start of the hills.
  • I had Courtney and Diana with me and we mainly watched the police cars go by. One female officer drove by and gave us a big cheer which was pretty cool. We passed one women out there but for the most part it was a lonely late night stroll to the 68 mile check in where i meet up with Robin and started doing the Palas Verde Hills.
  • They were long and rolling and seemed to go on forever. We caught a team or two and everyone wanted to know home much further. I told them the truth and i doubt many wanted to hear it. Someday I would like to walk through this section during the day because I bet it is lovely. In the middle of the night it is nice but nothing special. There still was not a breeze and it was still muggy out.

  • The mile 75 aid station is definitely a graveyard and I had no plans to stick around. I got weighed in (was starting weight again), grabbed a couple cups of soup and my drinks and headed  for some more Rolling Hills fun. I was 17th to the leave the aid station and had arrived there in 18:40 (14:56 pace). I only stayed 3 minutes according ti the race log.
  • Last year I did this section to Redondo Beach with Lisa and it was light out halfway through. This year with Courtney it was dark the whole way to the beach. I was only walking and around 4:30am I hit my real low point and really did not expect to catch anyone. Then when we got to the first business area Courtney said she saw another racer. I did not believe her but they were out there.
  • It ended up being a women (I think Linda M) and a mile or so after we passed them, I made my only navigation error of the race. The road we were on looked to go straight and up yet another hill. There was an off ramp looking road going downhill but there was no signs and we did not remember being warned about a turn. Most of the race, if there was turn that did not seem to make sense, there were signs and we were usually warned.
  • Well we hesitated for a minute and then I decided to go straight while we called for help. We ended going a couple hundred yards up the hill slowly and then saw light coming. We called out for help but the light quickly disappeared with no response. I then took out my phone and mapquested how to get to the beach and found out we needed to go where the lights went.
  • We probably wasted a good ten minutes (Did an extra 0.4 miles or more.) but in the end I probably made up the time with my anger fueled pace for the next couple hours. When I get lost I get mad and use that anger to move faster. the only bad thing is the downhills to the beach are steep so i could not walk down them as fast as I wanted.
  • Miles 86 to 101
  • But I finally got to the beach and my crew and continued to chase after the lights I saw pass behind us earlier. It took me 6 miles to catch them but we did at mile 87.5.

Mile 95
  • Diana paced me the last 15 miles of the race and they were hard ones, my feet were killing me on all the concrete and we were confused at times at which path to take. At the check point, 4 of us were within 4 minutes of each other and three of us were there at the same time. I was recorded as being in 15th place with a time of 22:58 (15:45 pace). I did not stop at all and just kept walking.
  • Once we left Manhattan Beach and entered the Dockweiler section I was dead in the water. I was walking badly and Nathan, Steve and Yolanda all passed me like I was standing still. In the back of my mind I hoped to break 27 hours but soon all I wanted to do is finish.
  • When we got to the Marina section the bikes were every where and super annoying plus I ran out of fluids. The last section is 13 plus miles and that is too far at the pace I was going. Plus all the street crossing made things even slower. i could see my sub 27 hours slipping away.
  •
  • Just before we got to the awful Washington Blvd street crossing, I decided to run again. I put my ipod on and cranked up Above and Beyond and ran for a minute or more as hard as I could and then i would walk a minute.
  • Of course, we did not make the Washington Blvd light and waited there for a couple minutes at least. Then there was a mile or so constant curbs, cars and lights but i kept my run / walk strategy going as much as possible. My feet were killing me but I knew I could do the last couple miles if i just focused on nothing but running as hard as i could and then walk to recover.
  • Just before we turned on to the craziness of Venice boardwalk, Linette appeared with a milk and a coconut water which I needed badly. I kept moving and drank both while moving as fast as possible. Now I did not have lights, curbs or cars just tons of people to weave through. In my mind I made it a game.
  • Above and Beyond was blasting through my ears while I was racing through the crowds with my walk / run pattern. I had Linette and Diana in tow and with a mile and half or so left, Courtney and Robin joined us. I had my pack and was heading to the finish as fast as I could.
  • Finally the finish was in sight and i had them all join me so we could finish together! My time was 26:33 and i believe I was 18th. Last year my time was 28:20 and I was 14th.
